Ilkay Gundogan approaches Manchester City amid news of leaving Barcelona
FC Barcelona’s journey under the new head coach Hansi Flick has officially begun. The club edged past Valencia CF in their campaign opener. But, in that game, last season’s key midfielder IIkay Gundogan did not play, amid speculations of a possible transfer out.
The 33-year-old German was speculated to move out of the club in the ongoing transfer window, and now him not being present raised more speculations. It has also come out in multiple reports that there are rumors the ace midfielder has asked his former club Manchester City to take him back.
How did Gundogan perform in 2023-24?
Gundogan acted as a savior for Xavi, who coached FC Barcelona last season, playing in 36 La Liga and 10 UEFA Champions League games. He was one of the star performers, having 18 goal contributions in these games.
This time, the situation in Barcelona is a bit different. The club has recently secured Dani Olmo on a big money deal, while star midfielders Gavi and Frenkie de Jong are expected to be match fit soon. The Blaugranas are facing financial crunches and selling the star German might do them some improvements. So, a way out for Gundogan in the last few days of this transfer window is inevitable.
Manchester City, the club he left just a year back might also want him back as the Barca No. 22 has represented City for about eight years, and fits perfectly with Pep Guordiola’s tactics. FC Barcelona’s head coach, however, recently shared his views on Gundogan, after the game against Valencia, saying that he had a chat with the player and feels that Ilkay would stay.
