“He will also bring us success”: Erik ten Hag defends Casemiro amid struggles
Erik ten Hag defends Casemiro despite poor form
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has defended Casemiro amid the midfielder’s poor run of form. He was also criticized heavily after United’s 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in the Premier League for a poor display, with Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp comparing his performance to a player in Soccer Aid.
Casemiro has struggled with injuries this season, missing three months of action due to fitness issues. This has certainly taken a toll on his performances, as the former Real Madrid star hasn’t been at his usual best this season. It has drawn him plenty of flak from the supporters, but manager Ten Hag remains defensive of him.
The Dutchman praised Casemiro for his abilities and underlined his importance in the side. Speaking to the press, he said:
“We needed a six when I arrived here and last season he was fantastic. I don’t think he had ever scored so many goals but as a holding midfielder, he was so important to the team. This season he has struggled with a bad injury that he never had in his career but he is such a winner – all his career, he has always won. Everywhere he was, there was success. And I trust he will also bring us success. I know he needs games and he will be better. I am very confident about him, he is a fighter, that is why he has won big trophies. He is a personality and is a very important player.”
Casemiro will likely start for Manchester United against Coventry City in the semi finals of the FA Cup on Sunday at Wembley. It’s a place the Brazilian has fond memories of, having scored against Newcastle United in last year’s Carabao Cup final which helped secure them the title. He even won the man-of-the-match award for it, and maybe a return to the ground could spur him on.
All eyes on FA Cup for Manchester United
Manchester United will be looking to go all out against minnows Coventry City and reach the FA Cup finals, as the competition presents their last hope of picking up a silverware this season. Much was expected of them following a promising first year under Ten Hag, who guided them to the Carabao Cup title, the FA Cup finals, and fourth place in the Premier League. By contrast, it’s been a seriously underwhelming campaign for the Red Devils this time around, who went out in the group stages of the Champions League, lost their Carabao Cup crown, and now languish in seventh position of the league table. Winning the FA Cup will help salvage their disappointing campaign.
