Germany Squad for Euro 2024: Who’s in and who’s out from the updated list of players?
Hosts Germany and team coach Julian Nagelsmann have announced their provisional squad for Euro 2024 this summer. The three-time European champions will be heading into this tournament with big expectations, despite their mixed run of form over the last few years.
Julian Nagelsmann has announced the preliminary squad of 27 players, with some surprising omissions and inclusions. Let’s take a look at the players who will be participating in Euro 2024, with just a few weeks left for the tournament.
Germany Squad for Euro 2024: Players who are included
Nagelsmann has included players from Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen and in-form Stuttgart. He has included four goalkeepers in the squad with Fulham’s keeper Bernd Leno missing out due to injury.
Veterans Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos who lifted the 2014 World Cup were included in the 27-man squad. Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan will lead his nation despite Neuer’s return to the first-team fold.
20-year-old Aleksandar Pavlovic who missed the March international friendlies due to injury is set to earn his first international cap this summer.
Goalkeepers: Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim), Alex Nubel (Stuttgart), Manuel Neuer (Bayern Munich), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona)
Defenders: Waldemar Anton (Stuttgart), Benjamin Henrichs (RB Leipzig), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Robin Koch (Eintracht Frankfurt), Maximilian Mittelstadt (Stuttgart), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid), Nico Schlotterbeck (Borussia Dortmund), Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen)
Midfielders: Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen), Chris Fuhrich (Stuttgart), Pascal Gross (Brighton and Hove Albion), Ilkay Gundogan (Barcelona), Toni Kroos (Real Madrid), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich), Aleksandar Pavlovic (Bayern Munich), Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich), Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)
Forwards: Maximilian Beier (Hoffenheim), Niclas Fullkrug (Borussia Dortmund), Kai Havertz (Arsenal), Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich), Deniz Undav (Stuttgart)
Germany Squad for Euro 2024: Players who are excluded
One of the most undeserving exclusions in the provisional squad is Mats Hummels who has played a pivotal role in leading Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final. The veteran defender has been in prime form and he received his last international cap in November.
Leon Goretzka and Timo Werner also missed out due to their lack of consistent performances for their respective clubs.
One more Borussia Dortmund player to miss out is the versatile and creative attacker Julian Brandt who has had 25 goals involvements with the Black and Yellow this season. Despite his captivating performances, Brandt’s omission showcases a missed opportunity for Germany to fortify their attacking options.
“I had long talk with both Hummels and Goretzka. They’re very disappointed as they’re out of the list,” Nagelsmann said. “I tried to explain why they weren’t included. It’s understandable that they are sad.”
