Germany legend Gerd Muller, also nicknamed “Der Bomber” was widely regarded as one of football’s greatest goalscorers due to extraordinary success on both club and international level. He helped West Germany win the World Cup in 1974 and held several long-standing goal-scoring records on the international level.

Muller still remains Bundesliga’s all-time top scorer and his achievements will forever be a part of the history of Bayern Munich and the German national team. 1861 Nördlingen

Gerd Muller began his professional football career with his hometown club TSV Nördlingen where he scored more than one goal in every game and played only one season for the senior team. Muller scored an impressive 51 goals in 31 games and his goalscoring prowess caught the attention of some bigger clubs in Europe. His performance at Nördlingen laid the foundation of his illustrious career with Bayern Munich.

Undoubtedly, Gerd Muller’s exemplary career at Bayer Munich left a remarkable legacy in the Bundesliga in years to come. He joined the club at the age of 18 in 1964 and helped them earn promotion to the Bundesliga in 1965 alongside teammates Franz Beckenbauer and Sepp Maier. Muller was a key figure in Bayern’s rise from the second division to one of Europe’s most-storied football clubs. He was nicknamed “Der Bomber” for his impressive goal-scoring prowess and his ability to score from unusual angles.

With Bayern Munich, Muller has won four Bundesliga titles, four German Cups, three European Cups and one Intercontinental Cup. During his 15-year spell with the Bavarians, netted a record 365 goals in 427 Bundesliga games which remains a Bundesliga record to this day. His single-season record of 40 goals in the 1971/72 season was broken by Robert Lewandowski in the 2020/21 season when he scored 41 goals. Der Bomber was also the recipient of the Ballon d’Or award in 1970 and his No.9 shirt became iconic at the Allianz Arena. Muller’s prolific goalscoring prowess was one of the key factors in elevating Bayern from a low-tier club to one of Europe’s powerhouses.

Fort Lauderdale Strikers

Following his noteworthy spell with Bayern Munich, Muller moved to the NASL at the age of 33 and signed for Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1979. His time in the NASL was short-lived but he helped elevate the profile of the American League for the next two years. Muller played three seasons with the club, scoring 38 goals in 71 games before retiring towards the end of the 1981 NASL season.

International Career

Muller is considered one of the greatest strikers of all time and his career with the German national team was equally impressive. He made his debut for the international side in 1966 and racked up goals at a rate of more than one a game, including a whopping eight hattricks. Muller scored 68 goals in 62 appearances and participated in two World Cup tournaments. He abruptly retired from the international team after winning the 1974 World Cup at the age of 28 after a public row with the German football association. His international record of 68 goals for Germany stood for four decades before Miroslav Klose surpassed it in 2014.

Gerd Muller married his wife Uschi Ebenbock in 1967 and the couple have one child named Nicole Muller.

Gerd Muller Death

The legendary German striker suffered from Alzheimer’s disease when he was a coach with Bayern’s second team in 2015 and later died on August 15, 2021, at the age of 75.
