FPL 2024/25: Top 5 Tottenham Hotspur players to have in your team
Tottenham Hotspur begin their second season under Ange Postecoglou with a lot of hope which will excite FPL managers. The Australian manager’s penchant for attacking football injected fresh optimism into the club last season. With a squad rejuvenated by an influx of young talent, Spurs are poised to play a more expansive and entertaining brand of football. Spurs paid a club-record fee that could rise to £65m for Dominic Solanke.
Tottenham have signed Burnley winger Wilson Odobert for £30m. Odobert follows Timo Werner, Lucas Bergvall and former Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray through the doors of Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while the likes of Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon and Tanguy Ndombele have been let go.
While the ultimate goal remains a Champions League berth, the immediate focus is on establishing a consistent winning mentality and solidifying their position in the Premier League’s upper echelons. Postecoglou’s philosophy, combined with the club’s ambition, has generated excitement among fans, who eagerly anticipate a season of progress and development.
As the new campaign unfolds, Tottenham will face stiff competition from a first few games of Leicester City, Everton, Newcastle and Arsenal. The progress made under Postecoglou will be closely monitored, as the club seeks to re-establish itself as a contender in the top end of the Premier League table.
#1 Pedro Porro
Pedro Porro is one of the most attacking defenders in the Premier League, and it was reflected last season in the 11 attacking returns produced by the Spurs right back. In addition to offering creativity in abundance from fullback, Porro also takes some of the set-pieces, and is frequent in taking shots.
At £5.5, Porro comes in cheaper than the likes of Josko Gvardiol (£6.0m) and Ben White (£6.5m) who offer less attacking threat than the Spain international, although it’s important to note that Spurs’ clean sheet chances look significantly weaker than teams like Manchester City and Arsenal given the high-risk style of play Ange Postecoglou favours.
The fixtures to begin the season look good, in particular the opening game against a weak promoted Leicester City side. Expect returns from Porro.
#2 Dominic Solanke
Dominic Solanke is one of the most exciting FPL prospects in 2024/25. Solanke’s career started at Chelsea and Liverpool but it is really Bournemouth where he has made a name for himself. He is one of those players who are perhaps unfairly underrated due to the club they play for. His consistent goal-scoring form over the past few seasons have made him a highly coveted asset in the game. The move to Tottenham Hotspur, under the attacking-minded Ange Postecoglou, feels like a perfect fit. Solanke’s ability to finish and bring teammates into play could thrive in Spurs’ all out attacking system, heavily benefiting the likes of Son Heung Min. This feels like a potentially very successful transfer despite the fee. In FPL, he’s available for £7.5m and is almost guaranteed to better his tally of 175 points from last season.
#3 Son Heung Min
Son Heung-min experienced an upturn in form during the 2023/24 season, despite the masses expecting otherwise, with the departure of Harry Kane. He averaged a high 6.1 points a game last campaign. While his goal-scoring exploits have always been impressive, his creative output also saw a notable increase. A promising partnership with new signing Dominic Solanke awaits. However, Son’s performances goes through lean and fruitful spells, and Tottenham’s overall attacking strength on the wings is largely untested and questionable, despite manager Ange Postecoglou choosing to play football the right way. He is priced at a high £10m and has been chosen by 11.5% of managers. Interestingly, Son is expected to play as a striker like last season but he’s been listed as a midfielder.
#4 James Maddison
James Maddison’s move to Tottenham last season brought the attacking flair and goal-scoring prowess that defined his Leicester City career to the top end of the Premier League finally. His exceptional set-piece ability and clinical finishing made him a coveted FPL asset over the years. However, inconsistency marred his debut season. A strong start was derailed by a lengthy injury layoff, and he struggled to rediscover his best form upon return. Priced at £7.5m with a modest 4.2 points average and low ownership, Maddison represents a high-risk, high-reward option. While his talent is undeniable, how well he has recovered from the injury is a question yet to be answered. Managers may prefer to monitor his early-season performances before investing in him.
#5 Cristian Romero
It was a close call between Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven. Last year, however, Van de Ven missed ten games due to injury, while Romero played 33, so it would be safer to go with the Argentine. Romero scored five goals, which makes him even more valuable as an FPL asset. He also managed to get seven clean sheets and 15 Bonus points. In total, Romero managed a 107 points. That being said , there is always a massive risk with Romero, as he accumulated seven yellow and one red card and conceded one own goal. He’s available for £5.0m and selected by 5.1% of the managers. However, he is the main man in the Spurs defence and as it is Ange Postecoglou’s second season at the club, you’d expect them to do better defensively. Keeping that in mind as well as his attacking returns, the former Juventus and Atalanta man could be a worthwhile investment.
