Feyenoord vs Leverkusen Preview
- Date: Thursday, September 19, 2024
- Time: 4:45 pm GMT
- Venue: De Kuip Stadium
Feyenoord will take on Bayer Leverkusen at the De Kuip Stadium on Thursday in their first match of the new league stage of the competition.
Feyenoord will look to fare better this time in the Champions League last season. They competed in the group stage with Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Celtic. However, they finished third behind Atletico and Lazio and were demoted to the Europa League playoffs. There, they lost to AS Roma on penalties after the score remained 2-2 after two legs.
Leverkusen, meanwhile, were in the UEFA Europa League last season and made it to the final without losing a game. They lost 3-0 in the final against Atalanta, which also marked their only defeat of the entire season across competitions.
With two such quality sides with different motivations, one could expect Feyenoord vs Leverkusen to be an entertaining clash.
Feyenoord Team News
Feyenoord are without Calvin Stengs due to a knee injury. Hugo Bueno, who’s recovering from a knee injury, and Quilindschy Hartman, who’s recovering from a knee injury, are doubtful for the clash. They could make Feyenoord’s bench.
Leverkusen Team News
Leverkusen are without Exequiel Palacios as he’s nursing a meniscus injury and he’s expected to be out until November at least. The rest of the squad is available.

Feyenoord vs Leverkusen H2H Record
Feyenoord have never faced Leverkusen in a competitive match previously. They have only faced off in a friendly once in 2005, which ended in a 4-2 win for the German side.
Key Players to watch in Feyenoord vs Leverkusen
Santiago Gimenez
The Mexico international has been excellent for Feyenoord overall and has continued his form this season. Overall, he’s scored 53 goals and provided 13 assists in 91 games for the club since arriving from CD Cruz Azul in 2022.
Santiago Gimenez was linked with many top clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea this summer but a move never materialized. He will look to showcase his brilliance on the big stage now to garner more attention next summer. He’s already scored four goals and contributed two assists in five games across competitions this season.
Florian Wirtz
Almost every attacking move for Bayer Leverkusen goes through Florian Wirtz. The German attacking midfielder has been a revelation under Xabi Alonso and was a key player in their incredible 2023-24 season.
The Ballon d’Or 2024 nominee has also started this season brilliantly, scoring three goals and providing one assist in five games across competitions. He will likely again be the key if Leverkusen are to unlock Feyenoord’s defence.
Feyenoord vs Leverkusen Prediction
Feyenoord had a thrilling but triumphant start to the season as they beat PSV Eindhoven in the Dutch Super Cup final. The match was an enthralling 4-4 in regulation time before Feyenoord won 4-2 on penalties.
However, they have won just one of their four league games so far – a 5-1 win over PEC Zwolle. They have played out draws in their other three games and have been let down by fine margins.
Leverkusen, meanwhile, also started the season off with a Super Cup win, as they beat VfB Stuttgart on penalties. Despite being down to 10 men since the 37th minute, they bounced back from being 2-1 down to make it 2-2 in regulation time before winning 4-3 on penalties.
In the league, they have won three games and lost one, which marked their first domestic defeat in over 50 games. They hammered Hoffenheim 1-4 in their last game.
The German side will be full of confidence and can be expected to take the three points against the Dutch side despite being away from home.
