Why is Fernando Torres hanging around with Jurgen klopp at Anfield? All you need to know

Few Liverpool players are as lauded as Fernando Torres has been in the modern era of the club with the Spaniard up there as a cult hero for the club. That is despite his move to Chelsea as he left the Reds after spending three-and-a-half years as their star striker. During that period, Torres went on to net 81 goals in 141 appearances, which includes an iconic 33-goal debut season for the club.

Now 40, the Spaniard has turned his eye towards coaching and is currently the assistant manager of Atletico Madrid’s U19 side as well as the manager of their Juvenil section. But that hasn’t stopped the Spaniard from still playing football as he rolled back the years during a recent Legends game. Torres played for Liverpool against the Ajax legends and even scored in front of the Kop much to the delight of supporters.

However, while he was part of Liverpool’s legend team for the charity game, Goal has reported that the Spaniard might be staying at Anfield even longer. As per the news outlet, the 40-year-old is set to spend the weekend shadowing Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff ahead of their clash against Brighton. Torres reportedly has a few days free from managing his Atletico Madrid youth side and wanted to learn from the best.

Marca has also reported that the Spaniard is looking to continue his development as a coach and eventually move up as a manager which is why he is shadowing the Liverpool coach. The 40-year-old is considered to be a star up and coming coach with many showering him with praise over the years. That includes former Atletico coach Armando de la Morena who, in 2022, admitted that he believes Torres could be a great coach.

“A coach like Fernando, knowing his career a bit, as a player and always with the respect that he has acted, has the conditions to be a great coach,” De la Morena told AS.

“I know it from the players too, who tell me wonders about him, how he transmits, how he gives them the concepts. So what I see in him is that if everything is going the right way, then we have a future coach for Spanish football and for Atletico and hopefully for the national team as well.”
