Everton vs Aston Villa Preview

  • Competition: Premier League.
  • Date: Wednesday, January 15.
  • Time: 7:30 PM GMT.
  • Venue: Goodison Park.

Everton vs Aston Villa will take place at Goodison Park in the late kick-off slot on January 15 in the Premier League as the 16th-placed side gets ready to host the team in eighth place.

The Toffees will enter this match on the back of a poor run of form. They won their last outing against lower league Peterborough United in the FA Cup, but drew two and lost two games in the Premier League prior to that. They have been really tame in front of goal for a top-flight team, scoring just thrice in the last five, and conceding four times. Having moved on from former manager Sean Dyche, the club are also back with David Moyes until 2027.

Villa, on the other hand, will enter their next match on the back of a mixed run of form. They have won three of their last five matches across competitions, secured one draw and suffered just one defeat in this phase. Their games have been eventful, with both teams scoring in all but one of the four matches. Aston Villa have scored eight and conceded eight in these matches, and will look to maximise attacking output while shutting shop at the back.

On that note, let’s take a look at the team news coming out of both camps.

New manager David Moyes will look to return the feel-good factor that Everton had about them during his time in-charge earlier. He will stick with his trusted 4-2-3-1 shape that the Toffees were already using under Dyche. He will, however, be without Dwight McNeil, Tim Irroegbunam, James Garner and Seamus Coleman for the next match.

Manager Unai Emery fielded a nearly full-strength lineup against Leicester in their last match as they emerged 2-1 winners. Captain John McGinn picked up an injury in that match and could miss the next one. He will join Pau Torres as the players sidelined with injury. Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers and Jhon Duran will mark their return from suspensions.

Key Players to Watch

Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)

The towering striker has underperformed his xG a lot this season, scoring just twice from 4.71 xG. He will need to step up and perform for Everton, else they will face a direct threat of going down, something that has never happened in the club’s history. He has also provided one assist and will look to put a good run of games together starting from Villa.

Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa)

Watkins recently marked his return from injury for around two weeks. He is the club’s top contributor with 12 GA so far, but has scored his eight goals from 10.33 xG, meaning he will need to be more clinical with his chances to improve the outcome for his team. His four assists have also come handy for Aston Villa and Watkins will look to increase his output further.

Everton vs Aston Villa Prediction

Going by recent head-to-head records, it seems that Aston Villa have the upper hand. However, facing a team with a new manager is always tricky, and couple that with the fact Everton will play at Goodison Park, they too are in with a chance to secure a surprise win. However, due to both teams being equally likely to get a result, it could end in a score draw.

Prediction: Everton 1-1 Aston Villa
