Euro 2024: Controversial Offside Call Denies Portugal’s Leading Goal
Ronaldo’s Assist Overruled by VAR
Portugal was denied a crucial goal against Czechia late in the second half of their Euro 2024 opener. Diogo Jota thought he had scored the winner at Leipzig Stadium on Tuesday but the goal was overruled.
Cristiano Ronaldo headed the ball to Jota who scored in an almost open goal in the 87th minute. The Liverpool forward celebrated believing he had secured the victory. However, the referee consulted the VAR and eventually ruled out the goal.
Using semi-automated technology the VAR determined that Ronaldo was slightly offside when he received the ball. Additionally, a foul in the build-up led to the goal being disallowed. The decision frustrated Portugal as they desperately searched for that winning goal.
However, they secured the victory in the end with a stoppage-time goal by Francisco Conceição.
Portugal’s Next Challenge Against Turkey
Portugal are in Group F with Czechia, Turkey, and Georgia. Their next match is against Turkey in three days.
Turkey began their Euro 2024 journey with a 3-1 victory over Georgia. Real Madrid’s Arda Güler scored a stunning goal showcasing his talent.
Portugal will be keen on securing their second win and qualifying for the knockout stages as they aim to win their second European Championship.
