Euro 2024: Federico Dimarco’s injury opens new door for Riccardo Calafiori

It’s not easy to make a break into the national team. Especially, when you are playing in the same position as Inter Milan star Federico Dimarco. The full-back has been exceptional in his role for the past few months and it seemed like his name was the first on Italy’s team sheet. However, with the player picking up an injury during the Euros, this could be a massive opportunity for Riccardo Calafiori.

The center-back had a rough night against Spain in Italy’s opening fixture as his own goal cost the team a 1-0 defeat. While Calafiori will be fuming following his mistake the player will be eager to bounce back from the setback. According to reports, the Italian team management is looking to deploy the player on the left as they could plug in his position with a different center back.

Meanwhile, there is no confirmed date for Federico Dimarco’s return. The player missed the team’s training session due to a bruised calf and is being evaluated for the upcoming games. If Italy manages to make it into the knockouts, fans could expect the player to be back following ample rest.

How does Federico Dimarco’s absence affect Italy?

The left-back has been a key player for his club and country with his upward movement on the left flank contributing a lot towards his team’s attack. His absence against Croatia could be a big blow for the team as Italy is yet to confirm their place in the knockouts. With the player unavailable for the fixture, we could see the team change his four-man defensive backline to three in the back to provide a more stable midfield in hopes of compensating the weaker left side.

Italy vs Croatia will be a big-stakes clash with both teams desperate for a positive result. Luciano Spalleti’s side is second in the group standings and needs to get a draw to ensure they move into the knockouts. Meanwhile, things seem tough for Croatia as the side needs to pick up the win while hoping that Albania does not cause an upset against Spain.
