Emotional Christian Eriksen scores exactly 1100 days after suffering cardiac arrest at Euro 2020
It was an emotional day for Denmark and Christian Eriksen on Sunday (June 16) after he scored in the Euro 2024 match against Slovenia. Eriksen, wearing No.10 has seen a turbulent last few years where he has seen more downs than ups, scored the opening goal in the Euro 2024 Group stage match against Slovenia. His goal went down as a mark of tribute for many reasons having suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during Euro 2020 (held in 2021).
Eriksen pays tribute to himself
Exactly 1100 days ago, playing against Finland in Denmark’s opening match of the Euro 2020, Eriksen fainted and was rushed to the hospital. It was later revealed that he had suffered a cardiac arrest which would eventually end his European campaign that season. Today, he played his first Euro game after that unfortunate incident as he scored in the 17th minute against Slovenia. The goal-scoring moment was applauded by everyone present in the stadium while the internet went crazy remembering the horror incident in 2021.
Eriksen after the incident in 2021 had seen a drastic downfall which led to him being released by Inter Milan who had been crowned the Italian champions that time. Later he would spend six months without a club before getting a six-month deal from English Premier League side Brentford who had secured promotion to the Premier League in 2022.
Eriksen’s resurgence
Eriksen would also have a defibrillator installed in his chest to monitor his heart moment. The Danish playmaker later earned a deal with Manchester United in 2022 when Erik ten Hag became the side’s manager.
While he is now down the pecking order at United, his primary aim will be to hold Denmark win their second European Championship. The Dans had previously won the Euro’s in 1992 when they were granted a wildcard entry.
