“The owners have common sense”: Erik ten Hag comments on his future at Manchester United
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is not worried about losing his job at the business end of the campaign. The Red Devils have been underperforming due to the number of injuries they have sustained during the season.
The Dutch manager’s position at United has come under severe scrutiny as the injury-ravaged side are sitting in eighth in the league table and are on course to have their worst season in the Premier League history.
Why is Erik ten Hag not worried about his future at Manchester United?
The UEFA Champions League is currently way out of reach for Ten Hag’s men and are now posing a challenge to even qualify for the UEFA Conference League. Manchester United’s lowest finish in the Premier League was seventh under David Moyes in 2013-14.
The only way United can secure a European spot is by beating Manchester City in this year’s FA Cup final but given their recent form, there’s a little chance of that happening.
A recent report suggested that even a win in the FA Cup final against Pep Guariola’s men would not see the Dutchman keep hold of his managerial position at Old Trafford.
On Friday, the former Ajax boss was asked if he felt his position is under threat at Manchester United.
He said: “No. The owners have common sense.”
“You see we have had 32 different backlines, we’ve used 14 partnerships at centre-back. When they see we don’t have a [fit] left back, they know that will have a negative impact on results.
“It’s a huge FA Cup final. We are happy to be there. It can be a highlight for us this season.
“We know the reason we are underperforming is because of injuries. No team will perform when you have so many injuries in key areas.”
Despite a horrid season, Erik ten Hag is convinced he’s the right man to lead Manchester United. The Dutch manager has had to work with 60 different injuries and new owner Ratcliffe could offer him some more time to prove his mettle. But any decision between Ten Hag and the club’s hierarchy would be dealt with after the FA Cup final on May 25.
