English Premier League Highlights: Key Moments from Gameweek 19

Gameweek 19 of the English Premier League marks the halfway point in the season with some shocking and interesting results in context to the Title race. It proved to be a week of underdog wins, comebacks, and some great goals.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal took on West Ham at the Emirates while Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United were involved in a thrilling comeback facing Unai Emery’s Aston Villa. The defending Champions, Manchester City were also back in action over the midweek taking on Everton at Goodison Park.

The midtable also saw some interesting clashes with Wolves’ trip to Brentford, Bournemouth taking on Fulham, and Chelsea’s game against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge.

North-London Rivals face shock defeats

The eternal rivals of North London, Arsenal and Tottenham both were involved in shocking defeats over the midweek. The Gunners took on sixth-placed West Ham at the Emirates stadium losing 2-0, thanks to goals from Tomas Soucek and Konstantinos Mavropanos in either half of the game.

Arsenal have now lost the top spot to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool who won their Gameweek clash against Burnley at Turf Moor. Liverpool is now first with 42 points while the Gunners remain on 40 after their loss to the Hammers.

Meanwhile, Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur, who were in decent form with three Premier League wins in a row were outclassed by De Zerbi’s Brighton at the Falmer stadium. The Seagulls displayed a scintillating performance in front of the home fans taking a lead 4-0 by 70 minutes. Tottenham were able to pull two goals back but it only proved to be a consolation as the game ended 4-2 in the favour of the home side.

Tottenham are set to host an in-form Bournemouth side in Gameweek 20 who were also involved in a dominating 3-0 win against Marco Silva’s Fulham at the Vitality stadium. Postecoglou’s men currently stand fifth in the table with 36 points closely followed by West Ham at 33 and Manchester United at 31 points.

Thrilling comeback at the Theatre of Dreams

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United were involved in a dramatic night at Old Trafford as they made a stunning second-half comeback to win the game 3-2 after being 2-0 down in the first half against Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, also breaking their goal-drought after not scoring for four consecutive games in all competitions.

Alejandro Garnacho’s brace drew the Red Devils level while a smart finish from Rasmus Højlund completed the comeback for the Manchester side. The Dane also registered his first Premier League goal in the process, pummelling United to the seventh spot in the table.

The defeat must surely have left a sour taste in Villa fans and players’ mouths as they lost a great opportunity to go second in the table and get level with Liverpool on 42 points.

Newcastle United’s top four challenge takes a major hit

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have been in a major slump due to an injury-ridden squad as the Magpies have now lost four out of their last five Premier League games, the latest of them coming against Nottingham Forest at home.

Former Newcastle striker, Chris Wood scored a Hattrick for the Tricky Trees as they made a comeback after going a goal down to win the game 3-1 by the end of the ninety minutes and could prove to be a turning point in Nottingham’s battle to stay away from the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Newcastle currently sits in the 9th position behind the likes of Brighton and Manchester United with 29 points in 19 games and would need to come up with something special to get close to the Champions League qualification spots.

The defending Champions are back with Premier League action!

After their Club World Cup triumph in Saudi, gameweek 19 also saw Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City getting back in Premier League action with a trip to Goodison Park.

Everton were successful in taking a lead in the first half of the game, completely against the run of play but eventually lost out to the attacking prowess of Pep’s side as goals from Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez, and Bernardo Silva saw the away side take the three points back to the Etihad.

City are currently fourth in the table with 37 points and are set to host bottom-placed Sheffield United in game week 20 of the Premier League 2023/24 season.
