Could Elon Musk potentially buy Liverpool?
The richest man in the world Elon Musk could be set to buy Liverpool. Musk, who already owns companies such as X (formerly Twitter), Tesla, PayPal and SpaceX reportedly has his sights set on the Premier League club.
Musk has previously been linked with buying a football club in the past too but the Liverpool rumours have been started by none other than his own father. Speaking to Kait Borsay on Times Radio, his father Errol Musk remarked that it is possible that his son goes for the current Premier League leaders.
The interviewer asked him whether his son wanted to buy Liverpool football club to which Errol jokingly replied that he couldn’t comment on it as they would raise the price.
Borsay, who is a Liverpool fan then insisted, claiming that it would mean a lot to the Reds fanbase, even asking whether Elon had expressed interest in buying the club. To this, Errol interestingly responded by saying, “Oh yes, oh yes – but that doesn’t mean he’s buying it, you know. He would like to, yes. Obviously, anyone would want to. So would I.”
Musk, who as per Bloomberg Billionaires Index, has a net worth of $439 billion, could easily afford to buy the club, being an estimated 32 times richer than the Red’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), who are roughly worth $13 billion.
However, there is nothing to suggest that FSG, led by John F Henry are at all interested in selling the club. Last summer Henry claimed that their bond with the club was ‘stronger than ever’. Fans too are largely happy as they sit on top of the Premier League and Champions League tables, with smart investments having become the norm over the past decade or so.
A couple of years back, Musk sent football fans into a frenzy by tweeting that he wanted to buy Manchester United. While he later clarified that he was joking, he also remarked that if he were to buy a club, it would be them, as he was a long-time supporter.
His father further explained in the interview that the family has ties to the city of Liverpool. “My mother – (Elon’s) grandmother – was born in Liverpool and we have relatives in Liverpool,” he explained. “We were fortunate to know quite a few of The Beatles, because they grew up with us, my family, and so we’re really attached to Liverpool.”
