Brazil Expands Squad for Copa America, Replaces Injured Goalkeeper Ederson

In addition to replacing injured goalkeeper Ederson, Brazil has called up three extra players for the Copa America after South American regulatory body CONMEBOL permitted countries to increase their roster sizes from 23 to 26.

Ederson Replacement for Copa America

Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said in a statement on Sunday that Porto attacker Pepe, Juventus defender Bremer, and Atalanta midfielder Ederson have been added to the team.

Rafael from Sao Paulo has been substituted for Ederson from Manchester City by coach Dorival Junior, who took over Brazil in January following a string of disappointing performances in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup under Fernando Diniz.

How did the Manchester City goalkeeper suffer an injury?

The latest Ederson injury update indicates that he is not expected to return to training soon. When Ederson clashed with Cristian Romero, the Argentina defender for Tottenham Hotspur, during City’s 2-0 away victory last week, he had a minor fracture to his eye socket.

The 30-year-old custodian celebrated Sunday’s Premier League victory with his City colleagues following an Etihad Stadium victory against West Ham.

Brazil’s initial 23-man roster was revealed earlier this month; it included 17-year-old Endrick, a teenage sensation, but it lacked veterans like Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus, the strikers, and defensive midfielder Casemiro.

In a CBF video, Junior stated,

“All players, regardless of when they were called up, arrive on equal terms to compete and fight for a place in the starting team,”

When will Brazil play their first match in Copa America 2024?

Nine-time Champions Brazil’s Copa America campaign begins on June 24 against Costa Rica. Four days later, on July 2, they play Paraguay. The United States will host the quadrennial competition from June 20–July 14.

As part of their preparations, Brazil will play friendlies against the United States on June 12 and Mexico on June 8.
