If there was ever a manager who was capable of saving a club from the brink of relegation and turning it into a decent, consistent mid-table side in the Premier League, it would be David Moyes. Over the years Moyes has shown his managerial caliber with a number of Premier League clubs, most notably, Everton, Manchester United, and West Ham, and with his second stint with the Merseyside club set to get underway shortly, it could well be what the Toffees need to stay up this season. 

With a tenure spanning over 27 years and counting, Moyes has had both ups and downs and has had good, bad, and mixed reviews during his time at various clubs. However, he has shown the ability to steady the ship at any club and has become somewhat of a specialist in helping teams get out of a rut and setting them back to winning ways.

Since his humble beginnings in Glasgow, Scotland his journey so far reflects his focus on the grind and effectiveness. Starting his managerial career with Preston North End shortly before moving to Everton, things have come full circle with the Scotsman set to return to the Merseyside club 23 years since the start of his first stint.

Over time he has increased the expectations of the fans, especially with his work at West Ham, making them genuine contenders for European spots. Having the reputation of rebuilding a team and guiding them back to safety, he is indeed the perfect fit for Everton.

Different Leagues, and different nations, Moyes has done it all, in England and in Europe. Will his influence bring Everton back to safety and be consistent? Only time will tell.

David Moyes is said to be one of the highest-paid managers in the Premier League with a salary of around £5 Million annually. In terms of his net worth, It is estimated to be around $25 million.

David Moyes’ Early Life

By and large, there is very little that is known about the life of the Scottish manager and his upbringing. That said, his footballing journey very much began as a player when he first joined the Icelandic side IBV as a youngster, before eventually finding himself at Celtic, the biggest team in Scotland in 1980. 

Thereafter, he would make the move to a number of Scottish and English sides such as Cambridge United, Bristol City, Shrewsbury Town, and others before eventually making his way to Preston North End, where he would see out his playing career and transition into an assistant coach before becoming the head coach in 1998.

As a player, Moyes played as a center-back and even captained the Scotland Under-18 side, playing under former UEFA Technical Director Andy Roxburgh in 1980. Notably, Moyes was a very religious man, which sometimes became a point of conflict with some of his teammates.

Previously, David Moyes parted ways with a luxurious mansion valued at £4.3m, following his move from Preston North End. The house situated in Haighton, close to Preston, made for a vast property, spread across 76 acres and allowed for a peaceful recluse away from the limelight.

By and large, there are no real endorsements for David Moyes, however, that could be set to change following the beginning of his tenure at Everton. As such, one can expect to see some of the club’s sponsors endorse the 61-year-old manager.

David Moyes’ playing style and tactics

The Scottish manager is famous for his 4-2-3-1 formation which allows his side to create attacking overloads and allow for more one-on-one opportunities for his attacking players as well. Out of possession, the team relies on their compact shape and two defensive midfielders to mop up trouble and release the attacking wide players on the break. It is an adaptable system, that helps to keep his side defensively solid, yet carry some amount of offensive threat on the break, which is exactly what a team like Everton currently needs.

By and large, David Moyes’ career as a manager has at times been a mixed bag, but for the most part, yielded some great results for the sides that he has managed over the years. Thus, one could say that consistency is key for the Scottish manager, and one of his key objectives is to eke out results by any means necessary and put points on the board. 

As mentioned previously, David Moyes began his managerial career at Preston North End, having been the assistant manager and seen out his playing career at the club as well. With the club at risk of relegation in 1998, Moyes took charge and steered them to safety and in the following season led the team to the Division Two title and a promotion to Division One. Coming agonizingly close to getting promoted to the Premier League, however, remains an even greater feat. 

Following a great showing at Preston, Moyes was brought in by Premier League side Everton. Joining in 2002, Moyes did what he promised and staved off the relegation threat for the club. By 2004-2005 the Scotsman had managed to secure Everton a place in the third qualification round for the UEFA Champions League. That said, the weight of new expectations was too heavy for the club and resulted in the club somehow managing to avoid relegation. 

By 2013, Moyes had done a lot of great work at the Merseyside club which led to him receiving high praise from other Premier League managers as well. Among them was Sir Alex Ferguson, who Moyes would then go on to succeed at Manchester United.

For the most part, Moyes’ time at Manchester United was a bit of a disaster, and only 9 months after his appointment, the Scotsman was relieved of his duties. The decision came after his side lost 2-0 to Everton, the first time that the Merseyside club had emerged victorious in the tie in 44 years. Losses to Swansea City and Sunderland in the months prior were not a good look for the manager either. 

That said, his stints at Real Sociedad and Sunderland were not too impressive either and left the manager in a bit of a dark place in his career. A year in Spain saw his side lose more games than they won and at Sunderland, Moyes could not avoid his side getting relegated. That said, his chapter at West Ham was a much more upbeat story. 

With his initial stint between 2017-2018, Moyes showed glimpses of his Everton form, arriving at West Ham with the team in the relegation zone and securing their survival in the Premier League with two games remaining of the season. That said, the club once again came calling after Manuel Pellegrini’s failures the following season, and this time Moyes would stay for 5 seasons during which he had many big results with the London team. With top 6 and top 7 finishes in the League, one could see Moyes’ time at West Ham as a roaring success, especially after he delivered a European trophy for the club as well.

With his second stint at Everton set to get underway shortly, there is a great belief that he can once again reach the same heights with the club that he did during his initial years. Whilst it may be difficult owing to the much-changed landscape of the Premier League since then, Moyes will still be expected to deliver solid results regardless.
