What happened between Dani Carvajal and Lois Openda during Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig clash?

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal’s fight with RB Leipzig’s Lois Openda was one of the major talking points in the teams’ UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg match.

RB Leipzig carried good momentum in the first half and created multiple chances. Quite a few of them came Lois Openda’s way but the striker misfired throughout the game. He had a total of five shots but none of those were on target.

However, he was involved in a heated exchange of words with Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal in the first half. The Belgian reacted to a robust challenge by the Spaniard and was rolling on the pitch. Carvajal came and reprimanded him and criticized him for making a meal of the tackle.

In response, Openda said,

“I’m going to f*** you up, motherf****r!”

Italian referee Davide Massa was also quick to arrive at the scene to have a word with both players before they calmed down and play resumed.

Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig match flow

The first half was quite a cagey affair with Real Madrid and RB Leipzig sharing the ball almost equally. Dani Carvajal’s fight with Lois Openda was arguably the biggest talking point in an otherwise dull 45 minutes.

However, Vinicius Junior scored in the 65th minute to put Los Blancos ahead 2-0 on aggregate. The Brazilian finished off a lovely move following a smart pass by Jude Bellingham. Leipzig were no pushovers and came up with an immediate response. David Raum’s cross was headed in by skipper Willi Orban as the game was set up for a tense finish.

Real kept their cool and saw out the rest of the game and won 2-1 on aggregate in the end to qualify for the quarter-finals.
