Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson takes ill amid replacement talk
Roy Hodgson Crystal Palace manager was rushed to the hospital on Thursday in the middle of a training session as the manager took ill. The news comes at a difficult time with Palace in turmoil and talks of the 76-year-old being replaced as manager.
Crystal Palace on Thursday evening issued a statement on X, “Following news that Roy Hodgson was taken ill during today’s training session, we can confirm that he is now stable and is currently undergoing tests in hospital.” The news wasn’t exactly a shock as Roy has struggled with his health all season. However, the veteran manager, the oldest in the English Premier League, seems to be recovering well.
According to several sources, the South London club has been thinking of replacing Roy with the next Crystal Palace manager Austrian manager Oliver Glasner. A string of poor performances and the loss against Chelsea seemed to be the final nail in the coffin. Crystal Palace sit in 15th position this season and have had a forgettable season marred with injuries. While it was initially believed that Palace would sack Roy Hodgson by the end of the month after accelerated conversations with Oliver, the decision might come even sooner if Roy isn’t in a position to return.
Oliver Glasner was last seen in charge of Eintracht Frankfurt. The Austrian manager even led the German club to European glory in the Europa League in 2022. His approach to football is certainly different from Roy Hodgson’s and could serve as a breath of fresh air.
End of the road for Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace?
Roy Hodgson has had an unbelievable stint in English football and currently is the oldest manager in the Premier League. The English gaffer managed Crystal Palace for a successful stint between 2017-2021 before exiting. After the sacking of Patrick Vieira last season, Roy took the tough decision to come out of retirement to help his boyhood club.
However, the rendezvous hasn’t gone to plan and seems to be reaching an unfortunate end. Now, at 76, it seems that the veteran manager has reached the end of the road in his managerial career. In his final moments at the club, the fans seemed to have turned against the gaffer. Roy would be sad to see it end like this at a club he has been affiliated with since the age of 15. An unfortunate end to a legendary managerial career.
