Group Standings and Points Table After Round 1 of Copa America 2024
The South American soccer tournament, Copa America 2024, has started in the USA on 21st June. This quadrennial soccer competition’s defending champions Argentina delivered a splendid curtain raiser in their 2-0 victory over Canada. While the first match of Group A belonged to the tournament favorites Lionel Messi and his side, the other two sides of the same group, Chile and Peru played out a goalless draw to start their journey. Chile will take on La Albiceleste in their next game, while Canada will lock horns with Peru.
In Group B, Venezuela edged past Ecuador with a 2-1 win in their opening game of the CONMEBOL competition. The group favorites Mexico on the other hand had to fight hard to earn a 1-0 victory over Jamaica. Gerardo Arteta’s goal separated both teams in this contest. Venezuela currently top the group, courtesy of the goal difference rule. The Mexicans will face-off against them in their next fixture.
In Group C, Uruguay and USA have clinched routine victories in their respective matches of the Copa America group stage. The 15-time Copa champions Uruguay literally walked in the park against Panama and left the field with all three points. Darwin Nunez scored once for La Celeste in this game. It was his fourth international goal in two matches. Following this strong start, they will now aim to dethrone Argentina at the end of the tournament. For the USA, winning against Bolivia has become a habit. The Yanks won 2-0 in their opening fixture. Their captain, who has made a record appearance for his country, broke the deadlock in the early minutes of the play. And the momentum of the whole match turned in the hosts’ favor since then. It looks like both Uruguay and USA will progress into the quarter-finals from this group unless some upsets happen.
Group D of the Copa America 2024 is the most interesting yet deadly one. Teams such as Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay and Costa Rica are fighting against each other to grab a quarterfinal spot. Selecao was held to a goalless draw by Los Ticos in their opening match. All the threats posed by the Brazilian superstars including Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Raphinha were thwarted by a disciplined Costa Rican defense. Brazil now must go for a win in their next game when they take on Paraguay, who fell to a 1-2 defeat against Colombia. James Rodriguez and Co dominated the whole 90 minutes and managed to top the “group of death” with all three points. Now, they will lock horns with Costa Rica to kick off the next round of the group stage for this lot.
Brazil are the favorites to lift the Copa America 2024 title. But, a draw in the opening game looks like a setback. Now, their remaining two matches are against Paraguay and Colombia respectively, who are known as the two dark horses in this soccer tournament, given their track record of pulling off major upsets. Selecao now must produce top performance to prevail over these obstacles in the remaining two games of the group stage. The other two favorites, Argentina and Uruguay got off to high-flying starts in their respective groups. Unlike Brazil, they have been pitted against seemingly less powerful sides and possess a higher chance to reach the quarter-finals of the South American soccer Championship.
