VAR Controversy: Why Gakpo’s Goal was Ruled Out in Netherlands vs Romania Clash
Cody Gakpo thought he had extended the Netherlands‘ lead against Romania in the Euro 2024 round of 16 but after a lengthy VAR check, the goal was ruled offside.
Gakpo scored following a header from Nathan Ake during a corner in the 63rd minute. But VAR revealed that Gakpo was just ahead of Radu Dragusin when the ball was played which eventually led to the offside decision.
Key Points on Offside Rule – A player is offside if:
- Any part of the head, body, or feet is in the opponent’s half (excluding hands and arms).
- Any part of the head, body, or feet is closer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent.
Netherlands’ Victory and Next Challenge
Despite the disallowed goal, the Netherlands triumphed 3-0 over Romania with Donyell Malen scoring twice late in the game.
The victory secured their spot in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2008 where they will face Turkey. Virgil van Dijk led a strong defensive effort keeping Romania at bay and ensuring a clean sheet.
With the Round of 16 already done and dusted we have got our Euro 2024 quarter-final fixtures all set up. Netherlands will face Turkey while France will take on Euro 2016 winners Portugal, England will face Switzerland, and arguably the match of the tournament will see host Germany lock horns with Spain.
