Chelsea seals European football for next season but competition is yet to be decided
Chelsea have sealed a spot in the European competitions for next season with a win over Bournemouth on the final day of the season. However, it is still not decided if they would be in the Europa League or the Conference League, as Manchester United hold the key.
The final decision on which competition Chelsea will play next season depends on Manchester City vs Manchester United in the FA Cup final. The outcome will be key and the Blues will be backing the Cityzens to win.
Should Manchester City win the FA Cup and complete the domestic double, Chelsea will go to the UEFA Europa League next season. However, if Manchester United wins the final, the Blues will play in the Conference League.
Mauricio Pochettino commented on the European qualification and said:
“I am happy for my staff. I am happy for my players. I am really happy. In the end, with all of this process over 10 months, and difficult circumstances, the way they buy our ideas and try to increase their levels, deserves some credit. Also for the staff. The staff was fighting every single day to try to convince them to provide the best tools for them to perform. In the second part, of the last 27, 28 games, the way we performed, we need to feel proud about that.”
Chelsea finished 6th in the Premier League with 63 points—19 more than they collected last season.
Mauricio Pochettino is not sure about Chelsea meeting this week
Mauricio Pochettino’s future was reportedly set to be decided in a meeting this week, but the Chelsea manager has revealed that nothing has been scheduled yet. He added that his staff was going on holiday tomorrow and said:
“I don’t know if that is going to happen or not. I don’t have any idea about this. All I can tell you is on Friday night, Todd invited me for dinner, and it was a very nice dinner together. But I don’t know about the rumours about the review. My staff is flying tomorrow for their holidays. I am going to stay in London for a few more days. I am always open. My phone is going to be on.”
When quizzed about the dinner, Pochettino added:
“I am not going to explain. It is only for you to know that I was with him. I’m not going to talk about this. If I invite you along, and you and I have dinner, it’s not for bad things. I don’t believe that.”
Chelsea finished the season with 5 wins in a row and the fans have called for the Argentine to remain at the club.
