Chelsea eyes Barcelona star as Thiago Silva’s replacement
Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a move for Barcelona star Ronald Araujo. The Blues see the defender as the perfect addition to the backline following the exit of Thiago Silva.
As per a report in Mundo Deportivo, Araujo is the big name on Chelsea‘s list this summer as Thiago Silva replacement. They want to sign the Uruguayan as they are keen on getting experienced stars in defence.
However, the Blues will face competition for his signature this summer. Bayern Munich have been pondering a move since January, while Manchester United are also said to be keeping tabs.
Araujo has stated that his future depends on Barcelona more than himself and told the media:
“My future depends on the club. Everyone knows I’m very happy here at Barca. And I’m very grateful to Xavi. We are very happy with the qualification, we played a great game at home. The support of our fans was very key from the first minute.”
Xavi has insisted that he wanted to keep Araujo and told the media earlier this month:
“I speak with Ronald very often, [including today. He knows perfectly what I think of him and I always do it honestly and sincerely. He knows what I expect and wish for his future from me.”
Barcelona are still in a financial crisis and could entertain offers for their star players to get within the FFP and La Liga limits.
Thiago Silva leaves Chelsea
Thiago Silva left Chelsea after the end of their season. The Brazilian star announced his decision earlier this season and sent a message to the fans:
“Chelsea means a lot to me. I came here with the intention of only staying for a year and it ended up being four years. Not just for me but for my family, too. I think in everything I did here over the four years, I always gave my all. But, unfortunately, everything has a start, a middle and an end. That doesn’t mean that this is a definitive end. I hope to leave the door open so that in the near future I can return, albeit in another role here. It is already hard saying goodbye in the most normal of circumstances but when there is a mutual love, it’s even harder. But once a Blue, always a Blue.”
The former PSG defender has announced that he will be rejoining Fluminense this summer.
