Casemiro Faces Setback and Onana Responds to Critics Ahead of Manchester Derby
Although Manchester United‘s Premier League finish this season was their lowest ever, they still have a chance to win a trophy if they defeat Manchester City in this weekend’s FA Cup final.
In their final Premier League game of the season, Erik ten Hag’s team defeated Brighton 2-0 courtesy of goals from Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund. But in the end, they finished with a disappointing 8th position.
And when the Red Devils play Manchester City in the FA Cup final, Ten Hag will have one more chance to prove to Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new co-owner of United, that he deserves to be in charge even after this season.
Brazil’s manager, Dorival Junior, has left the United star out of his team once again for the Copa America tournament, which is going to commence next month.
After a dismal campaign, Casemiro was left out of the first 23-man squad earlier this month. Even when teams were permitted to call up an extra three players, he was still without a spot in the squad.
Three new players have been added to the squad: Ederson, a midfielder for Atalanta, Pepe, a winger for Porto, and Juventus defender Bremer. Sao Paulo custodian Rafael has been called up to replace Manchester City star Ederson due to an injury.
United goalkeeper Andre Onana has responded to criticism from former players turned pundits. Speaking with Gary Neville on “The Overlap,” Onana expressed his frustration with the comments, stating,
“When it’s people who were sitting where I’m sitting, who won everything, sometimes it’s bizarre. We’re in the same boat. We try to follow your thing and what you did.”
“For me, I don’t mind, but other people may be affected. For me, to be honest, it’s just a part of the game. We’re just facing bad situations, a bad season. Sometimes you have own goals, you have deflections – there are things you cannot control in life.”
Historical Low in Premier League Finish
This season, United has finished in eighth place—their lowest ever in the Premier League—and a fan has discovered another undesirable record Ten Hag’s team has established.
The fan made a note of the fact that the Red Devils did not conclude the season as the greatest “United” in English football for the first time since the Premier League’s inception in a social media post. This is because of the goal difference, as Newcastle United ended one spot ahead of them.
Ten Hag’s team has thus lost out on European football for the first time in twenty years, while Newcastle will be playing in Europe next season after earning a spot in the Europa Conference League.
