Brighton vs Southampton Player Ratings: Kaoru Mitoma Stars in 1-1 Draw
Southampton have finally got a point away from home this season after holding Brighton to a 1-1 draw. The Saints had a goal ruled out by VAR just minutes after they equalized or else it would have been a terrific result for the away side.
The point has helped Brighton jump to 3rd in the table – above Arsenal and Chelsea, and level on points with 2nd placed Manchester City. However, they will slip back down to 5th in the two clubs below them to pick up a point over the weekend.
The draw does not change things for Southampton as they they remain at the bottom of the table. They are still 4 points adrift of safety and things are not looking good.
Brighton player ratings vs Southampton
Goalkeeper
Bart Verbruggen – 6: Had to make just one save today and should have done a lot better for the goal he conceded. Did not do much to help the defenders.
Defender
Tariq Lamptey – 7.5: What a performance from the right-back! His assist for the first goal was simply superb and the positions he was taking on the pitch were spot on.
Jan Paul van Hecke – 7: Did a lot more in the final minutes of the game as he went forward to try and score the winner. Could not do much in the box, but was decent in defense.
Igor Júlio – 7: Decent match and was roaming around a lot to ensure that the Southampton attackers never got time on the ball.
Pervis Estupiñán – 8: Played as left-midfielder almost as he was most involved in the attack that defense. He was in the opponent’s half most of the time and had a decent match.
Midfielders
Georginio Rutter – 7.5: Every time he got the ball, it looked like something special was bound to happen but the best he could do is hit the post once. Had more shots than passes completed today.
Matt O’Riley – 6.5: Was linking up well every time he got on the ball but sadly he hardly got a lot of of in the game. Got booked for a silly foul, but in hindsight, it might have been the right decision.
Yasin Ayari – 7: Stayed back and helped the defenders today. Went forward when needed at the very end, but his shot was wide off the post.
Forwards
Kaoru Mitoma – 8.5: A threat from the very start but he will be blamed for the dropped points today. He had a chance to score early but made up for it with a brilliant header.
Danny Welbeck – 6: Hardly got on the ball today as he was marked well by the Southampton players.
João Pedro – 7: The forward was trying too hard in the first half but things just did not go his way today.
Substitutes
Lewis Dunk – 6.5
Simon Adingra – 6
Mats Wieffer – 6
Evan Ferguson – 5
Yankuba Minteh – 6
Manager
Fabian Hurzeler – 7: Should have gone all out for the win in the second half but played a bit defensive.

Southampton player ratings vs Brighton
Goalkeeper
Joe Lumley – 7.5: Made 4 saves today but the goal he conceded should have been avoided. Not his fault, but his reaction was too slow.
Defenders
Yukinari Sugawara – 4.5: He should be happy that the manager took him off after the hour mark. Was simply terrible today and had a tough time against his countryman.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis – 6: Slowly showing why he is highly rated but there were a few too many mistakes today. Got booked and will now miss the Chelsea clash.
Jack Stephens – 7: A rock at the back and a key reason why they got a point today.
Kyle Walker-Peters – 6: A shadow of the player he was once. Never looked set and was getting drawn out a lot.
Ryan Manning – 7.5: Got things going for Southampton on the left side, but should have done better in stopping the cross coming in for the Brighton goal.
Midfielders
Tyler Dibling – 7: The best player on the pitch for Southampton though he was always marked out. He too picked up a booking and will miss the Chelsea clash.
Flynn Downes – 7: Scored the all-important goal for Southampton though he was not great it in the game. It was his only shot today, and the fans would forgive him for not doing much in the other 60+ minutes he was on the pitch.
Mateus Fernandes – 7: Did well in the first half but did not get involved enough in the second half.
Adam Armstrong – 6: Isolated the whole and got involved exactly when Southampton did not need him to. If it wasn’t for him moving his trailing leg, the Saints would have won 2-1 today.
Forwards
Cameron Archer – 6: Scored in the second half but it was ruled out for offside. Had two other chances to score in the first half but missed it.
Substitutes
Matías Soulé – 6
Nicola Zalewski – 6
Alexis Saelemaekers – 7
Manager
Russell Martin – 8: Brave substitutions today and the side was set up well from the start.
