Brentford vs Crystal Palace Player Ratings as the Bees win the opening clash
Brentford have kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. The home side needed goals in both halves to get the three points in the London derby.
Ivan Toney missing out was the talking point ahead of kickoff but Brentford ensured that the striker was not missed by the fans at the end of the game. Mbeumo and Wissa scored the goals for the home side while Pinnock’s own goal pulled Palace level in the game.
Without further ado, here are the Brentford vs Crystal Palace player ratings:
Brentford Player Ratings:
Mark Flekken – 8.5
Man of the match today as he made six saves and kept out all efforts from the Crystal Palace stars. However, he got beat by his own man and that saw his clean sheet go away.
Defenders
Mads Roerslev – 6
Not his best game as he was not winning duels and losing possession a lot.
Nathan Collins – 7
Pick of the Brentford defenders as he was giving the Palace forwards a tough time. He won all but one of his ariel and ground duels in the game and was rock solid.
Ethan Pinnock – 6.5
The own goal could have and should have been avoided, but it was the result of an instant reaction. There was very little he could do as he had to get his foot to the ball or it would have been tapped in by the Palace forward.
Kristoffer Ajer – 6.5
The main Brentford star at fault for the own goal as he failed to win his header. He as not great in the game but played the full 90.
Midfield
Christian Nørgaard – 7
Spent most of the time in the defensive third and was more interested in helping out his defenders than launching attacks.
Vitaly Janelt – 7
Ensured that Palace midfielders were not getting a moment’s peace and was tracking down the ball at every chance.
Mathias Jensen – 6.5
Spent most of the time on the wings but never really threatened the Palace defense.
Forwards
Bryan Mbeumo – 8
No Ivan Toney? No problem. His brilliant goal saw Brentford take the lead and it was no surprise that was involved in most of their attacks.
Yoane Wissa – 8
Another Brentford star who has shown that they are unlikely to miss Toney should the forward leave. He scored the winner today and was getting into the right positions throughout the game.
Kevin Schade – 7
He had the golden chance to seal the game early in the first half but missed the close-range effort. Was nothing special, but can be a vital player for them this season.
Substitutes:
Mikkel Damsgaard – 6.5
Keane Lewis-Potter – 6.5
Frank Onyeka – 6
Fabio Carvalho – 6.5
Ben Mee – 6
Crystal Palace player ratings:
Dean Henderson – 7
Decent outing for Henderson but he will be kicking himself for not doing enough for the second goal. He should have held his ground better and made it harder for Brentford.
Defenders
Chris Richards – 6.5
Not the best game for the former Bayern Munich man, but he did well in making things hard for Kevin Schade.
Joachim Andersen – 6.5
The defender kept losing possesion and was unable to deal with the Brentford press. He also managed to win just one of his 5 ground duels but the passes was decent.
Marc Guéhi – 7
A transfer might be on the cards, but he captained the side and showed why Crystal Palace are asking for over £65 million. He was rock solid at the back and lost just one of his 7 duels.
Daniel Muñoz – 7
The right wing-back has proved to be a differential for Palace. He was not great in the attacking third, but defensively, he ensured that Brentford could not create a lot from his side.
Tyrick Mitchell – 6
The left wing-back spent most of the time in the attacking half and was hardly coming back to defend. He made just one tackle in the entire game and made 30 successful passes.
Midfield
Adam Wharton – 7.5
Not at his best but still managed to do exceptionally well in the midfield. Lost 4 of his 10 duels but did not commit a single foul in the 74 minutes he played.
Will Hughes – 7
He kept trying his best to attack at every chance but just could not get the correct decision on time in the final third.
Forward
Daichi Kamada – 7
Decent Premier League debut for the Japanese star as he was trying to get into the groove. He created two chances for his teammates, but they could not convert them.
Eberechi Eze – 7.5
Scored a stunning goal from the freekick but the referee had blown for a foul before the ball went into the back of the net. The decision will remain a controversial one, as VAR would have very likely awarded the goal if the whistle was blown after the ball went into the back of the net.
Jean-Philippe Mateta – 6
He was on fire at the end of last season, but has not managed to keep the run going. He struggled to get on the ball and managed just 15 touches, with no shots in the game.
Substitutes
Odsonne Édouard – 6.5
Jordan Ayew – 6
Jefferson Lerma – 7
Cheick Doucouré – 6
