Bournemouth 1-1 Wolves Player Ratings: Penalty Shootout Decided The Fate For The Cherries

The Vitality Stadium saw the 5th round of the FA Cup match between Bournemouth and Wolves on the Saturday afternoon of 1st May. After a 1-1 score, the match went to extra time. Evanilson and Cunha were the stars from their respective team. But there was nothing separating these teams so we head onto the penalties. Sinisterra’s last kick helped Cherries win the game.

The last fixture between these two has resulted in Wolves being confident from the get go. However, it didn’t take long for the Iraola’s squad to hold the ball as the Cherries began to move forward from the flanks in the early minutes. Still, their deliveries in the box have been dreadful in the first 10 minutes.

In the 13th minute, the Cherries found themselves in a sticky situation in the box that was rescued by Kepa after Ait-Nouri had a decent connection with the ball after cutting in from the flanks. It turned to a quick counter for the Cherries as they almost broke the deadlock from a low cross from Brooks. Minutes later, he himself had a go from the box which was deflected for a corner. Be it the pressure of a knockout or a cautious approach, neither of the teams had a hold of the game for the first 20 minutes as scrappy plays were noticed from both sides.

After Bournemouth adopted a patient approach, it all began. A sweet ball from Hill towards Semenyo saw the winger attempting his shot. However, it was saved but the rebound was there asking to be taken and Evanilson converted it to give his team the lead. The goal saw Bournemouth playing the ball with more confidence. And from the set piece they got their second goal after Kerkez guided the header to the net, which had a final touch from the Dutch defender Huijsen, to give the Cherries a 2-0 lead. However, it was Deja Vu for the Cherries with the VAR all over again as the goal was disallowed after a check for hand ball and an offside.

As the check went on, the fans started chanting the infamous “this is embarrassing” chant to have a fun take on the dreadful waiting. After the 45th minute, the match saw 7 additional minutes due to the delay with the decision by VAR. Another goal was disallowed in the ending minutes of the first half when Scott tried to guide the low cross in the net.

The 2nd half began and the Cherries were on the front foot again as Semenyo had a go but the shot was blocked by the Wolves defender. Another creative set piece from the Cherries was blocked by Wolves defenders in the box. In the 59th minute magic happened as Cunha made a stunning shot from outside the box that gave his team the equalizer that they were looking for. With the score 1-1, the travelling fans started singing “Cunha again.”

The fans were furious with the referee’s decision in the 62nd minute to show Semedo a yellow card instead of focusing where his attention was needed. The 68th minute saw the introduction of Kluivert and Ouattara in the game. The 77th minute saw a half-chance for the Cherries as Huijsen’s header was saved by the keeper. Both Kluivert and Semenyo were denied by Johnstone in the 80th minute as they took their chances from outside the box.

With both sides slowing down, the match seemed to be heading into extra time. After the 90 minute mark, 5 minutes were added as additional time. The 92nd minute saw another attempt from Semenyo which was inches over the cross bar. It was a poor energy display from both sides which led the game to go for extra time.

The extra time started with the same low-energy display from both sides. With a few movements and half chances from each team, the 105th minute whistle came in. A tussle in the Wolves box at the 107th minute almost gave us a goal but the danger was eventually away after a clearance. The 127th minute saw another miss from the Cherries as Lewis Cook missed a free header in the box. Things went south as Cunha saw a red card after being in a fight with Kerkez who saw a yellow card. After the extra time, there was nothing separating these teams as we head into the penalty shootout.

Strand Larsen scored the first kick of the shootout after sending Kepa the other way. Kluivert took his kick calmly and guided it for 1-1. Andre scored his kick even after Kepa had a touch on the shot. Ouattara came up to take his kick and had a cheeky one step shot to make the score 2-2. Ait-Nouri slotted his kick on the roof of the net. Tavernier somehow managed to score after his shot was almost saved. T. Gomes scored his kick as well. However, Huijsen’s kick was saved by Johnstone. Doherty couldn’t even keep his shot within the goal as he missed it too. Lewis Cook stepped up and scored. Traore missed his shot as it rattled the bar and went out. Sinisterra stepped in to take his kick and scored.
