Borussia Dortmund vs PSV Player Ratings as Jadon Sancho shine

Borussia Dortmund vs PSV Match Review

Borussia Dortmund reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since the 2020-21 season after seeing off PSV Eindhoven 2-0 at home on Wednesday and win the tie 3-1 on aggregate. Jadon Sancho and Marco Reus were among the scorers for Der BVB, who are into Friday’s draw for the last-8.

Last month, the sides played out a tense 1-1 draw that kept the tie in the balance. Having never lost to PSV before, Dortmund were confident of their chances, and that showed when they made a fast start to the match. Ian Maatsen saw a shot parried over the bar in the second minute after the visitors had failed to clear their lines in the box.

Barely 60 seconds later, Dortmund were in front. Another sloppy play at the back by PSV saw Maatsen play Nicklas Fullkrug, who in turn switched it out to Julian Brandt. He then teed up Sancho who drilled a low shot that took a deflection off the post before finding the back of the net.

The hosts maintained dominion in the game for the remainder of the half, although PSV saw two chances through Johan Bakayoko and Guus Til saved at the other end. If the Farmers had leveled the scores early in the second half, the match would’ve opened up, but Dortmund came flying out of the blocks once more.

In the 78th minute, Reus had the ball in the back of the net but following a VAR review, it was ruled out. There was a handful of goalmouth action at both ends, with Dortmund and PSV both coming close, but lacking the cutting edge to make it count. Then in stoppage time, BVB finally broke PSV’s resistance, as Reus slotted home deep in stoppage time to make it 2-0 and seal their spot in the last 8.
