Borussia Dortmund had a penalty overturned by VAR in an outlandish refereeing decision
Former Man United star Marcel Sabitzer was denied a penalty despite the Austrian already converting the spot kick against Borussia Monchengladbach.
Sabitzer scored the opening two goals for the German side and almost secured a hattrick in the second half of the clash but the referee immediately blew the whistle after a VAR review.
What exactly happened in the Dortmund vs Monchengladbach game?
Borussia Dortmund midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was named in the starting side against Monchengladbach last night. He already scored the opening two goals for Dortmund.
The Black and Yellow were awarded a free kick in the 50th minute of the game as they were leading 2-1, with Sabitzer stepping up and slotting the ball into the back of the net securing his third of the night.
But the referee Badstübner stopped the play for VAR to check and went to the pitchside monitor to rule out the penalty and subsequent goal scored by Sabitzer. However, the referee blew the whistle after the Austrian took the spot kick.
Liverpool legend Didi Hamann slammed the referees’s decision to overturn Marcel Sabitzer’s goal against Borussia Monchengladbach.
“They’re playing us all for fools,” Hamann said to Sky Germany. “You can whistle a penalty, but you don’t have to. That means if you whistle a penalty, it has to stand. Then it takes three and a half minutes until the decision is reversed. Then I ask myself: What are they doing for three and a half minutes? I don’t understand that and I don’t understand why the referee doesn’t want to comment afterwards.”
The decision, however, didn’t cost Dortmund as they returned to winning ways by beating Monchengladbach 2-1 at home. They are now level on points with RB Leipzig and look to break into the top four before the end of the campaign.
