Top 10 Best FPS Games PC Right Now

Wolfenstein 3D and Doom created a foundation for first-person combat that dominated the early 1990s and erupted into the new century as one of gaming’s most lively, ever-changing genres. Nowadays, the FPS is most strongly linked with live-service multiplayer games, but an explosion of indie FPSes in recent years has reinvigorated the singleplayer campaign, and we’re seeing more co-op shooters emerge as well.

It’s a genre recognized for its violence, yet that’s not usually why we like FPS games. We applaud the first-person camera’s immersive potential, as well as how that perspective challenges our physical and emotional responses to situations presented straight at us. They are frequently tough reaction tests, but they also serve as the foundation for immersive worlds and realistic simulations of survival, war, and play. We sense a stronger, more authentic connection to the world around us because we perceive it through our character’s eyes.

Below is a list of the best FPS games PC available presently. It is not a list of the most historically significant FPS games, but rather ones that we would suggest to PC gamers who are new to the genre.

10. Doom Eternal

Doom Eternal
Doom Eternal | Credits: steampowered.com

Though we didn’t lavish it with praise at the time of writing our Doom Eternal review, in retrospect, this is truly the apex of the FPS genre. This is the genre’s essence condensed into one beautiful roar.

It’s also a very graceful experience in motion, especially for a game that requires you to garrote a demon every 17 seconds. Eternal, like Mario 64 and Mirror’s Edge, seems faultless when you get into its upbeat pace.

Every gun feels flawlessly calibrated, each level brilliantly timed, and every creature pulled screaming from the depths of Hell is clearly engineered to elicit exactly the precise amount of anger from the Doom Slayer.

Surprisingly, it works really well on almost every current platform. Whether you’re playing on the original Xbox One, tearing Cacodemon eyes out at 120 frames per second on a cutting-edge PC, or wrenching spines on the amazingly polished Switch version, Doom Eternal kicks ass regardless of medium.

9. Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx

If VR headsets were available at birth, Half-Life: Alyx may be our favorite FPS of all time. Unfortunately, the entrance hurdle to seeing this virtual reality wonder at its best is higher than a Strider’s off switch.

Even if you simply’settle’ for enjoying this brilliantly timed, very atmospheric shooter on a Meta Quest rather than Valve’s excruciatingly pricey Index, you’re still looking at spending a significant amount of money for a ten-hour game.

And yet, the highest compliment we can bestow on Alyx? We’d really consider spending the price of a PS5 or Xbox Series X to play this incredible shooter. Not only is it one of the greatest VR games available, but the shooting controls make you feel like the hero of your own action film.

8. Call of Duty: Warzone

Call of Duty: Warzone

Arguably one of the finest battle royale games. For years, three games dominated the genre: Fortnite, PUBG: Battlegrounds, and Apex Legends. But Call of Duty: Warzone has blasted it wide open by changing every aspect of the game into something intriguing but approachable.

The new stuff: after you die, you get one chance to resurrect by fighting another dead adversary in a 1v1 duel. You earn money by executing contracts around the map, chasing down adversaries, looking for treasures, or protecting a region.

Then there are the classic, familiar elements: the ever-shrinking play zone, a faultless “ping” system for flagging goods for your colleagues, and vehicles to carry you to faraway rings. It’s basically the genre’s greatest hits, all backed up by Call of Duty’s tried-and-true low-recoil gameplay.

7. Destiny 2

Destiny 2
Destiny 2 | Credits: steampowered.com

This title instantly makes the original game appear like a collection of prototypes, and it improves in every way. Actually, rethink that. It grows, taking the germ of the first game’s MMOFPS concept and creating a completely new, richer, deeper, and broader experience around it. But it is merely the beginning.

With a simplified, streamlined leveling system running through all of Destiny 2’s vastly expanded activities – from story-driven side-quests to multi-part Exotic Questlines, treasure hunting, and tactically reworked Crucible PvP – everything you want to do, however you want to play, will propel you forward. Then there’s the far more freeform approach to loadouts, which is fueled by more creative and expressive weapon design.

This is the definitive serialized story of John 117, and it is the go-to option for anyone wishing to get all of the finest Halo games in one spot. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is almost indistinguishable from the Spartan car wreck that debuted in 2014. After years of server patches, technological adjustments, and graphics upgrades, this is the definitive method to play golden-era Halo.

Whether playing the finest second level in all of the shooters in the original Combat Evolved or destroying teammates in PvP on Halo 3’s all-time favorite Guardian map at a blistering 120 frames per second on an Xbox Series X, Halo has never felt more important. We’re pleased that (Needler) pink Chief received the redemption act he deserved. Is it cheating to squeeze many games into a single entry? Sure, but we won’t say if you don’t.

When it comes to the finest Call of Duty games, this is both the most recent and one of the greatest. Whether you’re looking for a surprisingly imaginative storyline, multiplayer enhanced by the inclusion of Omnimovement, or the finest Zombies mode since 2010’s Black Ops, Black Ops 6 is the game to play.

The interesting thing about Black Ops 6 is that it contains something for any FPS lover, regardless of their mood. ’90s kids will love the sprinkling of capital-C Culture here – there are needle drops for Faith No More and Nine Inch Nails throughout the multiplayer and campaign – but it’s the mobility system and Treyarch’s extra-punchy weaponry that truly make this one stand out.

If you’ve taken a longer-than-usual hiatus from Call of Duty, Black Ops 6 is the ideal moment to resume where you left off: two kills on a helicopter gunner.

3. Valorant

Valorant
Valorant | Credits: store.epicgames.com

Valorant is Riot Games’ effort to reclaim CS:GO’s competitive FPS crown. It combines Valve’s tactical shooter with Overwatch’s over-the-top heroics. At its core, it is a tactical first-person shooter in which placement is king and every player is dangerously squishy, but each Agent possesses dazzling powers and abilities that may change the course of a match.

If you haven’t spent some time away, you might be amazed at how strong some of these abilities have gotten in the years since their release.

Valorant is more vibrant than CS:GO, but the clear graphics demonstrate that substance trumps flair. The fact that it has made the move to new platforms such as PS5 and Xbox demonstrates how much polish Riot put into its design and how balanced its levels and heroes are – and if you’re looking for a shooter that requires as much intelligence as muscle, few will be as fascinating as Valorant.

The experience is still a work in progress, with a few missing features from CS:GO, but if you’re searching for a tactical shooter that both plays and looks well, Counter-Strike 2 is the best option.

CS2 keeps the series’ original 5v5 action, but it revamps the rankings and ratings system to show players where they stand on a worldwide scale. While the gameplay has changed significantly, particularly the way smoke grenades operate, many CS classics, such as CS2 skins, have remained same.

1. Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6
Far Cry 6 | Credits: steampowered.com

Far Cry 6 may not be one of the series’ finest games, but it is still a terrific shooter. Does it still rely largely on familiar Ubisoft tropes? Of course. However, if you look past the dinky dachshund sidekicks named after a Spanish sausage and the normally assured, if monotonous, stealth, you’ll discover an FPS that feels like a much-needed turning point for Far Cry.

New features like as the Supremo Backpacks provide imaginative new paths for both subtle and explosive havoc, adding to Far Cry’s already enthralling power fantasy. Better yet? Far Cry has finally given us a protagonist worth rooting for in the form of freedom warrior Dani, whom you can see, listen to, and emote with in third-person cutscenes. And it only took half a dozen entries.
