Bayern Munich 1-1 Celtic Player Ratings: Alphonso Davies’ late equaliser sends Bayern into the Round of 16
Bayern Munich scraped a 1-1 draw against Scottish champions Celtic at home, thanks to a late goal from Alphonso Davies. This result has sent Bayern into the Round of 16 stage of the UEFA Champions League. The Germans will find out their last 16 opponents in Friday’s draw.
Both sides have made changes to their starting XI, as the managers on either side rolled the dice on new strategies. Bayern opened with a flurry of chances early in the match.
But Celtic bounced back and in the 16th minute, Celtic almost scored but Maeda’s shot drifted agonizingly wide. While Bayern managed to regain a bit of control after that, it was Celtic who were making a lot of noise on the pitch. Bayern almost scored at the stroke of half-time thanks to Kane but he got agonizingly close and hit the cross-bar.
Kane was replaced by Coman in the second half as the Englishman was playing with an injury, which gave Celtic even more hope of stunning the Bavarians and reaching the Champions League round of 16.
After a bright start to the second half, Bayern Munich lost their urgency and were looking to sleepwalk to the next round. Celtic took advantage of this situation and after a careless play at the back from the Bavarians, Kuhn capitalized on some poor defending from Kim, steadied himself, and slid a lovely low finish past Neuer and into the bottom corner.
While this awakened the hosts and started a flurry of attacks, Celtic held on well. While it looked like the game was going to add time, The Bavarians’ pressure counted as Olise delivered an inch-perfect cross into the box, and found Goretzka, whose header was superbly saved by Schmeichel. However, Davies was on hand to bundle home the rebound despite Carter-Vickers’ attempted clearance. With virtually the last kick of the game, Bayern are through to the round of 16 in the Champions League.
