“We would be happy to win the CL together”- Bayern Munich CEO provides update on Thomas Tuchel’s future
Bayern Munich CEO confirms Thomas Tuchel will leave at the end of the season.
Thomas Tuchel’s future at Bayern Munich is now crystal clear
Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dressen has confirmed that Thomas Tuchel will leave the club at the end of the 2023-24 season. The decision was made public a while ago. Tuchel has taken the team to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, where they drew the first leg 1-1 against Real Madrid. The German, though, will leave the club at the end of the campaign, Dressen confirmed.
Tuchel was appointed midway through the 2022-23 season after Julian Nagelsmann was shockingly sacked. He won the Bundesliga last term but lost out to Bayer Leverkusen this season. Bayern are still in the running for the UEFA Champions League title, but Tuchel will leave regardless of the outcome. Dressen said (via Instant Foot on X):
“We would be happy to win the CL together, then we will go our separate ways. You have to evaluate the decision at the time it was made. It was a different situation.”
Tuchel’s stint as the Bayern Munich manager has been controversial. The on-pitch results haven’t also been as expected. This is the first time Bayern didn’t win the Bundesliga in 12 years. They were also knocked out of the DFB Pokal in the second-round with a shocking 2-1 defeat to Saarbrucken.
Ralf Rangnick is the most likely candidate to replace Tuchel, as Fabrizio Romano has reported. The Bavarians are reportedly close to finalizing a deal with the former Manchester United man, who is currently in charge of Austria’s national team.
Tuchel, meanwhile, has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League. Several media outlets have reported that Manchester United are considering the German to replace Erik ten Hag at the end of the season.
Thomas Tuchel reacts to Bayern Munich’s draw against Real Madrid
Bayern Munich played out a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg on Tuesday, April 30. Bayern were the more dominant side for the majority of the game. Real Madrid, however, made the most of their chances and scored twice, eventually coming out of the contest with a crucial draw.
Tuchel highlighted that Los Merengues did what they do the best, making the most of their chances. Speaking to the media after the nail-biting showdown in Munich, he said (via Real Madrid Info on X):
“They (Real Madrid) did to us what they do to everyone… from two chances they scored two goals, it feels strange.”
The stage is now set for a stellar second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. The two European giants lock horns again on May 8, this time in Real Madrid’s backyard with a place in the Champions League final on the line.
