New Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany keen eye Arsenal star as his first signing

Arsenal star Oleksandr Zinchenko could reportedly become the first signing of the Vincent Kompany era at Bayern Munich. The Belgian coach has set his sights on his former Manchester City teammate whose future is uncertain amid a frustrating past season at the Emirates.

The Mirror reports that Bayern are keeping tabs on Zinchenko, 27, and could make a move for the Ukraine international this summer. The former City left-back fell down Mikel Arteta’s pecking order last season with Jakub Kiwior heavily impressing while he was out injured.

Zinchenko appeared 35 times across competitions, posting one goal and two assists. He dealt with various fitness issues but struggled to reclaim his spot from Kiwior when he returned from a calf injury earlier this year.

Vincent Kompany was appointed Bayern’s new manager on Thursday and succeeded Thomas Tuchel at the Allianz Arena. He knows Zinchenko well from their time playing together at the Etihad where they won two Premier League titles together.

Zinchenko has two years left on his contract with Arsenal and he acknowledged a tough past season where he failed to shine. He posted on Instagram after the Gunners missed out on the title to Manchester City:

“The clubs season is over now and unfortunately we didn’t get what we wanted but I am sure this club is on the right way to achieve everything. Personally I completely understand that it wasn’t my best season so far and I promise first of all to all fans and doubters that I’ll be back much stronger. Thank you so much for your massive support and see you very soon.”

Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko admitted he cried when Vincent Kompany announced he was leaving Manchester City

Vincent Kompany and Zinchenko could be reunited at Bayern Munich if the Bundesliga giants make their interest in the Ukrainian concrete. It could be an emotional reunion for the Arsenal man as he was left in tears when the Cityzens icon departed in 2019. He said the following year (via Sport 360):

“I was crying to be honest because nobody was waiting for that. But that’s football, nobody knows what could happen.”

Kompany, 38, was one of Manchester City’s most successful players, winning 12 major trophies during his playing days at the Etihad. He made 360 appearances and is arguably one of the Premier League’s greatest defenders in history. He left for Belgian outfit Anderlecht but Pep Guardiola has tipped him to return in the dugout at some stage.
