Bayern München 2–3 VfL Bochum Player Ratings: Bochum Stun Bayern in a Dramatic Comeback Victory

Bayern Munich’s 125th birthday celebrations were spoiled as relegation-threatened Bochum pulled off a stunning 3-2 comeback win at the Allianz Arena. Winning for the first time in Bayern in 34 years.

The hosts started strongly, with Raphaël Guerreiro opening the scoring in the 14th minute after Serge Gnabry’s surging run created chaos in the Bochum box. Bayern could have doubled their lead in the 20th minute, but Gnabry squandered a golden opportunity, striking the post from the penalty spot. However, the second goal arrived in the 28th minute, as Thomas Müller’s clever header teed up Guerreiro for his brace.

Bochum responded swiftly, reducing the deficit just three minutes later when Jakov Medic capitalized on a loose ball inside the Bayern box to power a shot past Urbig. The game took a dramatic turn in the 42nd minute when João Palhinha was shown a straight red card for a reckless studs-up challenge on Giorgos Masouras, leaving Bayern to play the entire second half with ten men.

Bochum took full advantage after the break, equalizing in the 51st minute as Ibrahima Sissoko rose highest to head home a brilliant cross by Felix Passlack. With Bayern struggling to control the game, the visitors sensed an opportunity and completed their remarkable comeback in the dying moments. Midfielder Matus Bero extended the visitor’s lead with a lovely strike past Urbig.

Kompany to salvage something from the game brought four substitutes in the form of lethal striker Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala the magical youngster, Olise, and Laimer to strengthen the defence. The former three tried all they could to get a goal back. But the spirited Bochum team denied every opportunity Bayern threw at them. Including a point-blank range save by Horn late in the game to deny Musiala.

Bochum’s relentless defending sealed an improbable victory, dealing Bayern a significant blow in the Bundesliga title race. The defeat leaves Bayern vulnerable at the top, while Bochum’s resilience earned them a crucial three points in their battle for survival.
