Bayer Leverkusen Creates History: Bundesliga club set the longest unbeaten run in European football
The Bundesliga champions have pulled off yet another unbelievable comeback after their emphatic late win over Roma last night in the UEFA Europa League. Leverkusen were trailing 2-0 against Roma but two late goals in the dying embers of the game secured a 4-2 win on aggregate for the German champions.
Xabi Alonso’s side has reached the UEFA Europ League finals where they will face Italian side Atalanta and stretched their unbeaten run to 49 matches after Thursday night.

Bayer Leverkusen have now gone 49 matches without a draw, after drawing 2-2 with Roma in the second-leg of the UEFA Europa League semi-finals. Roma took a 2-0 lead on home soil with Leandro Paredes scoring twice from the penalty area to draw level on aggregate.
But the German had a little bit of luck on their side when Gianluca Mancini deflected the ball into his net in the 82nd minute, giving Leverkusen a breather. It was the seventh minute of extra time when Stanisic found the bottom corner to make the game 4-2 on aggregate securing their spot in Dublin on May 22.
Leverkusen have now extended their run to 49 matches, surpassing Benfica’s record which stood for 59 years in European football. The treble fantasy remains alive for the Bundesliga champions who have also secured a spot in the DFB-Pokal final where they will face FC Kaiserslautern. Xavi believes his side deserves to win all titles this season.
“We’ll play two finals in a week as a result,” Alonso said. “We showed great character today after their second goal. I looked my players in the eye afterwards and saw that they wanted more.
“We still have the chance to win three titles. And my boys deserve all three titles.”

The Bundesliga champions are now 49 matches without a defeat in all competitions, breaking Benfica’s previous record of 48 which stood for 59 years. They have not lost since their last defeat against Bouchum on May 27, 2023.
Xabi Alonso’s side have registered 26 wins and six draws from 32 matches in Bundesliga, whereas won all five DFB-Pokal matches to secure their spot in the final.
The German side are also 12 matches unbeaten in the Europa League this season and will be aiming for treble glory.
