‘Here we go’ – Barcelona appoint Hansi Flick to replace Xavi

Despite producing a shocking u-turn in April and staying at Barcelona, reports indicated that the La Liga giants were looking to sack Xavi Hernandez as their head coach. The reasoning being that the club had failed to win a trophy this season after dropping out of the Champions League, the Copa Del Rey and even falling short in the La Liga title race.

That was the reasoning earlier as well but things changed behind the scenes which lead to Xavi staying. However, in a statement released on Friday, Barcelona confirmed that they had sacked Xavi less than a month after the club persuaded the club legend to stay.

The statement revealed that the decision took place after a meeting with the club’s board and that the game against Sevilla will be his last. But the La Liga giants never revealed who was set to replace the Spaniard in the hot seat.

Fabrizio Romano confirms that Barcelona are set to appoint Hansi Flick

Yet despite that, the rumour mill indicated that Thomas Tuchel and Hansi Flick were amongst the front-runners for the job with the former Germany head coach the leading candidate. That was partly because of his success with Bayern Munich and reports indicated that president Joan Laporta wanted the German to replace Xavi.

That has now been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano after the transfer expert revealed that Flick was closing in on a move to Barcelona. The Italian journalist has now confirmed that an agreement has been reached between the two sides with Flick set to become Barcelona’s new head coach. The German manager will sign a two year contract and is set to bring two German assistants as a part of his team.

The 59-year-old has been out of work after leaving Germany in 2023 but reportedly impressed Barcelona’s board during their initial talks.
