Aston Villa vs West Ham Preview

  • Tournament: FA Cup 2024-25 Third Round
  • Date: Friday, January 10, 2025
  • Time: 3:00 pm GMT
  • Venue: Villa Park

Aston Villa will host West Ham United at Villa Park in their FA Cup third-round clash on Friday, January 10. It is their opening fixture in the competition this season and both sides will look to avoid an early exit.

Aston Villa have had a highly inconsistent 2024-25 campaign so far. They sit eighth in the Premier League standings after having finished fourth last time around. They have won nine, drawn five and lost six of their 20 league games. They are fifth in the UEFA Champions League table but were eliminated in the EFL Cup by Crystal Palace in the Round of 16.

West Ham, meanwhile, have had a poor campaign so far and sit 14th in the league standings. They are just seven points above the relegation zone and manager Julen Lopetegui is under serious pressure. They were eliminated in the EFL Cup in the third round this season as well, losing against Liverpool.

Hence, both sides will be eager to have a deep cup run to stand a chance of winning a trophy and make their season better.

Key Players to watch in Aston Villa vs West Ham

Ollie Watkins

The England international has had a rather underwhelming 2024-25 campaign so far for Aston Villa. He has scored eight goals and provided six assists in 26 games across competitions.

Ollie Watkins saw Jhon Duran take his place in the starting XI recently due to his poor form. However, with Duran getting a three-match suspension after a red card, Watkins has the opportunity to take his place back.

Watkins has scored just two goals in his last 10 appearances and will look to change that against West Ham on Friday.

Mohammed Kudus

The Ghana international has had a tough 2024-25 campaign just like the entire West Ham team. He was suspended for four games earlier this season. He’s scored three goals and provided two assists in 17 games across competitions.

However, Kudus has arguably been one of the only two bright sparks for West Ham in the majority of the games they’ve played in. He looks to provide them an attacking threat while also helping out in midfield. With Jarrod Bowen out injured for a few months, Kudus will have to shoulder even more responsibility for West Ham.

Aston Villa vs West Ham Prediction

While both sides haven’t been at their best this season, West Ham have certainly faltered down much further. Julen Lopetegui has been under constant pressure and could be sacked soon.

The Hammers have won just two of their last eight games, drawing two and losing four. They have lost their last two games, losing 5-0 against Liverpool and 4-1 against Manchester City. Aston Villa, meanwhile, have two wins, two defeats and one draw in their last five games. Villa lost 3-0 against Newcastle, drew 2-2 against Brighton and then beat Leicester City 2-1.

Both sides will be keen to go further in the cup competitions. However, West Ham are deprived of confidence and also have some key players out due to injury like Jarrod Bowen. Hence, Villa are likely to take the win on Friday.

Predicted Score: Aston Villa 3-1 West Ham
