Aston Villa 0-0 Manchester United Player Ratings as spoils shared at Villa Park

Aston Villa played a goalless draw against Manchester United at Villa Park in the Premier League as the Villans were denied the chance to move into the top three. The two sides played out a dreary first half, with the chances hard to come by. United attacker Marcus Rashford initiated a dangerous counter-attack from the middle of the pitch but had his shot saved by Emiliano Martinez.

Villa stepped up their efforts to find the breakthrough after the break, with Youri Tielemans coming close to doing so after having his shot saved by Andre Onana. Bruno Fernandes nearly had it done for Utd after hitting the crossbar from a free kick while on the other hand, the hosts came within inches of breaking the deadlock in the dying minutes after Philogene blasted his shot into Diogo Dalot’s back from close range.

Goalkeeper

Emi Martinez: 7/10 – Coming off an incredible display against Bayern Munich, Dibu Martinez ensured another clean sheet against Man Utd, making a couple of important saves.

Defenders

Lucas Digne: 5/10 – Struggled to create many chances up front, except for his promising cross to Bailey. However, he was robust in the defence.

Ezri Konsa: 7/10 – Unfortunately had to be hauled off inside 12 minutes with a hamstring issue. Got replaced by Diego Carlos

Pau Torres: 6/10 – Had to tack the back seat for most of the game due to the colossus Diego Carlos. The Spaniard delivered 7 passes into the final third although his long-balls were quite off the mark.

Matty Cash: 5/10 – Conceded a turnover in possession which, much to his relief, proved futile after Rashford’s shot was saved by Emi Martinez. Also failed to make a big difference in the final third. However, made a last-ditch clearance against Garnacho’s pass

Midfielders

Ross Barkley: 6/10 – A strong performance from Barkley, making 6 recoveries and completing as many passes into the final third.

Youri Tielemans: 7/10 – Once again shone bright with an all-round performance. Solid defensively, winning 3 out of 3 tackles and four duels. Also delivered 9 passes into the final third – the joint-highest in the game. Forced a fine save from Andre Onana with his long-range effort.

Morgan Rogers: 5/10 – An underwhelming performance compared to his captivating display against Ipswich. Nearly hit the target with a long-range effort and failed to conjure anything apart from that.

Attackers

Leon Bailey: 4/10 – A not-so-impressive showing from the Jamaican winger, who failed to hold on to Digne’s cross in the first half.

Jaden Philogene 4/10 – Had the chance to be the hero of the game with a glorious chance towards death but his rather lethargic effort hit Dalot’s back.

Ollie Watkins: 5/10 – Watkins would be disappointed after failing to inspire the Villans. Involved in some intricate passing but the final product was missing.

Substitutes

Diego Carlos: 7/10 – Came earlier than expected due to Konsa’s injury but made a significant impact in the defence, similar to the game against Bayern Munich. The Brazilian colossus made 8 recoveries and 3 clearances.

Ian Maatsen: N/A

Jhon Duran: N/A

Manager

Unai Emery: 6/10 – Emery wouldn’t be happy with the result as Villans have drawn consecutive games in the Premier League. The Lions grew into the game in the second half but their efforts still proved inadequate.

Goalkeeper

Andre Onana: 7/10 – Denied a long-range strike from Youri Tielemans with a great save. The Cameroonian must have gained confidence after an assured display.

Defenders

Diogo Dalot: 7/10 – Was one of the key figures behind United’s great defensive showing. Improved massively in the second half, winning 2 tackles, 2 ground duels and the most important block against Philogene.

Harry Maguire: 5/10 – Replaced at half-time by Matthijs de Ligt due to a potential injury concern. Fared well while he lasted on the pitch.

Jonny Evans: 8/10 – A surprise package and Evans completely caught everyone off guard with his solid performance. Looked almost unbreachable, having finished with a game-high 11 duels, 4 tackles, 3 recoveries, and as many clearances

Noussair Mazraoui: 6/10 – One of the busiest players in the first half, making 3 clearances, 2 recoveries, and as many interceptions. Substituted after the break for Victor Lindelof

Midfielders

Kobbie Mainoo: 6/10 – A vibrant performance from the teenager but withered in the second half once Villans started to dominate the possession. Still, Mainoo managed 7 recoveries and as many passes into the final third

Christian Eriksen: 7/10 – The Dane had a superb outing and was arguably the best player on the pitch in the first half. Pulled the strings in the midfield by creating 2 big chances and completing 9 balls into the final third.

Bruno Fernandes: 6/10 – Came close to finding the breakthrough for the Red Devils after hitting the woodwork from a free kick.

Attackers

Alejandro Garnacho: 5/10 – The Argentine had an infuriating evening after failing to make a big impact. Despite his defensive efforts, he made a poor final pass when United had a glorious opportunity on the counter.

Marcus Rashford: 5/10 – More expectations after the brilliant Porto showing but rather turned out to be a quiet display. Forced a save from Emiliano Martinez in the first half after a blistering run down on the left flank.

Rasmus Hojlund: 3/10 – Failed to make any difference in a lacklustre Man Utd attack. Didn’t even manage a shot or touch in the penalty box

Substitutes

Victor Lindelof: 6/10 – Bedded in quickly in the defence and played a part in United keeping the clean sheet

Matthijs de Ligt: 6/10 – Hit the ground running after moping up any possible threat created by the Villans

Joshua Zirzkee: N/A

Antony: N/A

Casmeiro: N/A

Manager

Erik ten Hag: The Dutch gaffer will be relieved to see his side’s defensive effort, especially after back-to-back poor performances against Spurs and Porto. Ten Hag’s substitutions in the second half also worked and he should look to build on this defensive foundation in the future.
