Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu signs new long-term contract with the club
Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has signed a new long-term deal with the club. The initial announcement regarding extension talks was made in January, with the Gunners making it official earlier today.
The deal will see the Japanese defender remain at the Emirates until 2026, with an option to extend for another year.
Takehiro Tomiyasu: Arteta’s opinion on the defender
Tomiyasu joined the club from Bologna in 2021 for a reported £17m on a four-year deal. His new contract will take his tenure at the club past five years.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta expressed his delight at the defender signing a new contract. Speaking to the club media, the Spaniard praised Tomiyasu’s qualities on and off the pitch.
Arteta said,
“We are so pleased to have Tomi commit his future with us. Together with his natural ability and strength, Tomi’s attitude, mentality and values are first-class.
“Tomi is loved by everyone and has been an integral part of the squad since joining us. The way he trains, with his desire and determination to be the best version of himself every day is admirable.
“We look forward to continue working with Tomi in the future years.”
Tomiyasu is a rare profile of player that can play in any position across a back four, as well as a back three. However, injuries have limited his involvement with the first-team, with the Japanese defender making just 73 appearances, scoring one goal and providing six assists.
He will now look to stay fit more consistently as he makes his return from calf muscle issue.
Arsenal sporting director Edu Gaspar praises Tomiyasu
Since taking over in 2019, Edu has been closely involved in first-team operations with recruitment at the forefront. Being Arsenal’s first-ever sporting director, the Brazilian has set good examples through his work and his relationship with the players and staff.
Speaking about Takehiro Tomiyasu’s contract extension, Edu praised his overall personality and abilities.
“We are very excited to have Tomi with us for more years to come. He has huge qualities both on and off the pitch, and offers so much strength and versatility to our squad.
“Tomi is a top professional and it’s great that he’ll continue to play an important role in the coming years, as we work towards achieving our goals.”
The Gunners will next face title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on March 31 in a crucial encounter.
