Controversial Call Clouds Argentina’s Victory Over Chile
De Paul’s Dangerous Tackle Ignored by Referee
In a dramatic Copa America Group A clash Argentina edged out Chile with a late goal securing a 1-0 victory and a spot in the quarter-finals.
But the match was marred by a controversial moment in the 28th minute when Rodrigo De Paul came down hard on Gabriel Suazo’s upper ankle. Despite clear video evidence, the incident was not reviewed sparking outrage among fans and pundits alike.
The incident occurred during a chaotic few moments in Chile’s penalty area with Suazo staying down in pain after De Paul’s stepped on his upper ankle.
Replays showed De Paul’s cleat making significant contact with Suazo’s ankle which many believed warranted a red card. Despite this, the match continued without any intervention from the referees.
The tension only heightened as Argentina dominated the game creating several scoring opportunities. Julian Alvarez and Nicolas Gonzalez both tested Chile’s veteran goalkeeper Claudio Bravo while Lionel Messi nearly found the net with a powerful shot that hit the post.
It wasn’t until the 88th minute that substitute Lautaro Martinez capitalized on a rebound from a corner securing the win for Argentina. This victory coupled with their earlier win over Canada places Argentina firmly at the top of Group A with six points.

Chile’s Struggles Continue
For Chile the defeat extends a long and frustrating streak against Argentina in Copa America play. Despite their two tournament victories, Chile has never beaten Argentina in regulation time at the Copa America with their only successes coming through penalty shootouts in the 2015 and 2016 finals.
Rodrigo Echeverria’s powerful strikes in the 72nd minute and shortly thereafter were among Chile’s few highlights but Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was up to the task of preserving the clean sheet.
As the group stage nears its conclusion Argentina looks strong while Chile will need to regroup quickly. With Canada also securing a win over Peru, the race for the quarter-finals intensifies.
Canada Breaks South American Jinx
In another Group A match Canada recorded a historic 1-0 victory over Peru marking their first win against a South American team in 24 years. Jonathan David scored the decisive goal in the 74th minute bringing an end to Canada’s long goal drought.
This win under new coach Jesse Marsch boosts Canada’s chances of advancing in their first Copa America appearance.
As the tournament progresses all eyes will be on the referees’ decisions especially after the controversial non-call in the Argentina-Chile match. Fans and teams alike will be hoping for fairer officiating as the stakes get higher in the Copa America.
