“That Villa Park game is probably one of my favourites”: Andy Robertson on Liverpool’s sole successful Premier League title triumph in 2019-20

Liverpool are in peak form in the 2024-2025 season, especially in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. Liverpool being one of the most successful clubs in the world have a knack for competing in the big competitions each season.

In the 2024-2025 Premier League season, Liverpool are in first position and have the chance to go ten points clear if they beat Aston Villa today. Liverpool have already qualified for the UCL RO16 whereas their competitor Manchester City are yet to do so implying that Liverpool only have the Premier League fixtures to focus on as of now. The Scousers are still holding their own after beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at home in their last Premier League match.

Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson said that more difficulties await them since a lot of work is left. The left-back is right since Liverpool have been in this position in the past as well only for Manchester City to clinch the Premier League on the last day. A lot of consistency would be required as the season enters into a much more crucial stage. Liverpool will face Aston Villa in a mid-week fixture and then travel to Etihad Stadium in an away fixture to face Manchester City.

Andy Robertson told Liverpoolfc.com: “It’s never straightforward. I think we’ve learned that over the years and there’s always bumps and there’s always twists and turns, and I think that’s always how it is when you get to the end of the season no matter where you’ve finished.

“There’s always been a kind of rollercoaster element to it and I think it’s part and parcel of it, it’s what the fans enjoy, they enjoy the rollercoaster [because] it makes the highs a lot more special and the fans’ support has been unbelievable for us up to now.

“As I’ve said, we never take it for granted: every away end being sold out, how many games we’ve got, and every time we come home the stadium is full and they get behind us.

“OK, there might be nervy moments and there might be bad moments but hopefully we can all be happy at the end of the season.

“But it’s up to us to try to achieve that and we can achieve it all together by pushing in the same direction, by supporting each other, and I believe we have done that well up to now and we’re going to do that up to the end of the season.”

The schedule just now is intense and you don’t get time to even analyze the last game before you move on to the next game.

“We just have to move on and already we now head into Villa and it’s going to be an unbelievably tough game. I think they’ve only been beaten there once this season and I know how good they can play and how good they are, so it’s going to be a difficult game.

“We always have a difficult game there but we have to go there full of confidence, we’re still in a good moment, and hopefully we can get the win that we need.”

Liverpool have had quite a history with Aston Villa, especially in the 2019-2020 season when they finally won the Premier League title after 30 years. Liverpool were trailing by one goal and it was Andy Robertson’s equalizer that gave hope and ultimately Sadio Mane sealed the deal.

He further added ” That Villa Park game is probably one of my favorites, one that I look back on with happy memories.

“It was a bit earlier on in the season that time but when you go to Villa Park it’s always a tough game… they’re a tough team to play against – especially under Unai Emery now with how well they play and how difficult they make it.

“There’s a reason why they’ve only been beaten once at Villa Park this season and I think their record last season was really good as well. It’s always a tough game and it’s a game you have to be at 100 percent [in] to get anything out of.

“That’s what we’ll be aiming to do but we know that they will also be aiming to do the exact same thing and it’s important that we bring our best version of ourselves – and if we do that, obviously we believe we can get the three points that we need.”
