Liverpool’s Summer Pursuit of Fluminense Midfielder Andre Trindade Ends in Frustration
In a setback for Liverpool, their attempts to secure the services of Fluminense midfielder Andre Trindade during the summer transfer window fell through. Despite persistent rumours linking the 22-year-old Brazilian to Anfield, journalist David Ornstein, writing for The Athletic, reveals that negotiations between the Reds and Fluminense failed to materialize.
David Ornstein on Andre Trindade
Ornstein sheds light on Liverpool’s interest in Andre, stating,
“When Liverpool found themselves trying to strengthen at No 6 and various options were explored, a call was made about the availability of Fluminense talent Andre Trindade. It did not work out for either party then, and an alternative route was pursued, which removes him from the agenda now.”
Addressing recent speculation surrounding Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha, Ornstein dismisses the likelihood of Liverpool securing the 28-year-old. He explains,
“Joao Palhinha of Fulham has been linked, but nothing is expected to emerge on this. Liverpool believes their midfield is in good shape, and their normal profile would be different from that of the Portugal international, who is 28 and has a steep anticipated transfer fee.”
Andre to Liverpool – Still Possible?
The failed pursuit of Andre Trindade remains a point of frustration for Liverpool, particularly as the defensive midfield position was a priority for the club. Liverpool eventually signed Wataru Endo, a move that has garnered mixed reactions from fans and pundits alike.
While supportive of Endo, Liverpool acknowledges the need for a player who can contribute both in the present and the future. At 30, Endo may not represent a long-term solution for the Reds. Andre Trindade, having played a pivotal role in Fluminense’s Copa Libertadores triumph, is reportedly available in January for a release clause of £34 million.
As the January transfer window looms, Liverpool faces the challenge of rectifying the missed opportunity and potentially securing Andre Trindade, who could provide the midfield dynamism the club seeks.
