Born in Birmingham, Michigan, the former soccer legend was born to a Greek father Demetrios Lalas, and an American mother Anne Harding Woodworth. Having one younger brother by his side, Greg Lalas, who is also a former professional soccer player helped both the brothers establish a soccer career. From the early years of his childhood, Alexi Lalas was not fond of soccer and didn’t start playing the sport till eleven years of age.

While he started his journey with soccer during his high school days, Lalas was also involved in Hockey during this time. After his splendid college football run with Rutgers University, Lalas moved to International soccer and trained with former Arsenal legend Bob McNab to polish his skills. After having a tremendous World Cup in 1994, Lalas signed with the Italian club Padova in the Serie A.

After two years in the Serie A, Lalas was a part of Major League Soccer with the New England Revolution in 1996. After having two good seasons with the club, Lalas was loaned out to Ecuadorian club Emelec but only for a month. After his return to America, Lalas was traded to MLS Club MetroStars in 1998. After another decent season, he was traded to the Kansas City Wizards for the 1999 season.

After hanging up his boots in the 1999 season, he returned to play as a discovery player in 2001 for Los Angeles Galaxy. Having a decorated and illustrious tenure with the club, Lalas won the 2000 CONCACAF Champions Cup and the 2001 US Open Cup with the club. After having a good run with the LA Galaxy, he ultimately retired permanently in 2004.

Lalas had 96 appearances with the United States National team from 1991 to 1998 and scored nine goals during his tenure. While he was not able to become a team starter initially, everything changed at the 1994 FIFA World Cup when Lalas started and played each game for the USA National team. His performances throughout the World Cup gained him huge recognition and was turned out to be a reliable defender for the team.

He was also a part of the USA Olympic soccer team at the 1992 Summer Olympics where he again performed decently. Having performed several outstanding performances for the US National team, Alexi Lalas was one of the most fierce defensive players on the team.
