AC Milan 2–2 Fiorentina Player Ratings: Milan Strike Back Twice as the Game Ends All-Square

Its time to shift the focus to Italy for a mid-table clash in the 31st Matchday of the Serie A where AC Milan host the team just above them in the points table Fiorentina.

Both sides who have had a negative result in their previous encounter came to the match to win and take all three points. A win for Fiorentina would mean that they can climb as high as 6th position in the table, and even though a positive result won’t take up the host’s position in the table, it will surely help them to solidify their position and keep themselves alive for the top six contention.

Sérgio Conceição fielded his team in the 4-2-3-1 formation rather than his preferred attacking setup of 4-4-2 while the opponents opted the 3-5-2 formation that indicated that both the teams focused on keeping possession and have a midfield domination approach. Both the home and away fans came in solid numbers despite a satisfactory performance from their teams this season. Both Milan and Fiorentina had a duty to make their fans proud and do their best to get their three points.

Fiorentina got the ball rolling and both teams faced difficulty in keeping the ball for more than a certain period of time. Nevertheless, Milan who has a knack of conceding in the very first minutes did not break that and had a nightmare start as they conceded twice in the first ten minutes.

A terrible mistake from Musah led to Guðmundsson making a long run towards the box and providing a carpet cross which went inside the net after a deflection. Just minutes later Kean shook the net by taking a powerful shot as a result of some beautiful play crafted by the Fiorentina players.

However, Fiorentina continued to focus on the attack rather than defending to keep their lead solid. This was countered by Tammy Abraham, who, with his brilliance, scored for Milan, keeping their hopes alive. Though three goals were scored in the first 45 minutes, the half remained relatively boring.

The second half began with the same monotonous game, with both teams one after the other making a few chances in the attacking third, where the goalkeepers prevailed. But the constant attack from Milan led to a 1v1 situation which Jovic properly executed.

The match continued with Kean making some constant efforts to score the third goal which was saved by Mike as he stood as a rock in front of the goal. After this some attacks were made which eventually had no results and at full time the score was 2-2.

GK – Mike Maignan – 8/10

Though he was just a spectator and could not do anything for Fiorentina’s first two goals, he came into rescue by saving a couple of shots outside the box. In the second half he made about a half a dozen saves which came from the boots of Kean in form of some powerful shots. Excluding the two goals he had a great day resisting the opponents from scoring further. Had one of the best matches of his career.

LB – Theo Hernández– 6.5/10

Came very deep into the attack by making some crosses from the left wing, however, none of them could add pressure to the opponents. Coming to the defence, he was unable to cover Dodo for the vast majority of the match, which caused trouble for the Milan defenders. Did not properly mark Dodo, which made him a free man, leading to him making a very easy assist that paved the way for their second goal. Was seen arguing with Dodo rather than defending when the Fiorentina was attacking.

CB – Malick Thiaw – 5/10

Scored an own goal in the very first minutes from a cross that came from the left side of the box. Gave a lot of space to the opponents. Was involved in a few ariel duels in which he came out better off. Apart from that, he had a relatively nominal role.

CB Fikayo Tomori – 6.5/10

Had a bad day at the office during the first half as he along with his teammates, created a lot of space which was filled in by the Fiorentine attackers. In the second half, he came into his beast mode by properly making blocks and interceptions. Provided a key through ball assist that went straight to Jovic, which helped Milan to equalize the match

RB – Kyle Walker – 6.5/10

Kyle Walker defeated the Fiorentina attackers with his speed by properly intercepting the long balls that came from the midfield. However, in his desperation to prevent the third goal, he made a mistake in the dying seconds of the first half, which he rarely commits, leading to him getting booked by the referee, which limited his game to a certain extent. Was also making some cameo appearances on the right wing just outside the penalty box

CM – Youssouf Fofana – 6/10

Though he tried to make dribbles and crosses his attempts fell short in front of the opponent defence. Had a below average passing accuracy, lost possession and was not able make any of his moves count.

CM – Yunus Musah – 4/10

Had a dreadful first twenty minutes as he kept on losing the balls in the defensive side which straight on went to the opponent attackers. One such miss was properly excecuted by Guðmundsson which broke the deadlock. Was subbed off very early in the 23rd minute.

LW – Rafael Leão – 6.5/10

Rafael Leão made some useful first touches in the attacking third. Made some attempts to cross the ball inside the box, which were headed off by the opponent defenders. Made a key chance by providing an unselfish pass inside the box, passing the defenders, which however went to vain as none of his teammates were able to connect

AM – Tijjani Reijnders – 6/10

Had a below-average first half failing to make any impact in any aspect. Had only a few countable touches with the ball, but he lost possession multiple times.

RW – Christian Pulišić – 7/10

Played cleverly and was always present at the dangerous positions to make the opponent defenders struggle. Stood a couple of feet away from Tammy Abraham, received a ball, made an easy pass inside the box, which led to the first goal.

CF – Tammy Abraham – 7/10

Though he missed a great chance very early, he compensated for that by scoring a fantastic goal from his brilliance, along with the support of Pulisic which provided a rhythm for Milan to come back after a disappointing start. Was one of the only players who could put the visitors to the test.

Sub – Luca Jovic – 7.5/10

Came in very early as a sub and did his best to earn a place in the starting XI for the next game. Was the source of some shots which by his misfortune want wide from the goal. His efforts bore fruits when he scored the equaliser for Milan in the second half.

Sub – Santiago Giménez – 6/10

Sub – Warren Bondo – 6/10

Sub – Samuel Chukwueze – 6/10

Sub – João Félix – 6/10

Coach – Sérgio Conceição – 6/10

Properly came back to the game by making proper substitutions in the game and understanding the opponent’s weakness. Had a decent result at the end of the day.

GK – David De Gea – 7.2/10

Could not do anything when both goals were scored against him. Proved why he is still a world-class goalkeeper by making some point-blank saves in the second half keeping the scoreline intact. Had more of a sweeper keeper role, making clearances by coming out of the box.

CB – Luca Ranieri – 6/10

Shook the net once which arguably could have been one of his career best goals, which curled inside the goal. However, the goal was overturned due to a foul committed previously by his teammate

CB – Pablo Marí – 6/10

Though he stood as a wall in the first half, during the second half, the wall fell as he found it difficult to mark the players and gave space to the Milan attackers, which caused some issues.

CB – Marin Pongračić – 6/10

Was involved in some risky defending as he was seen pushing Tammy Abraham with both his hands, making him out of control. His physicality came ahead of the Milan strikers, but at a cost of putting his team in trouble for some potential penalties.

LWB – Fabiano Parisi – /10

Disappointing day for Parisi as he had a really low passing accuracy and touches. Did not succeed in winning duels he was involved except a few.

CM – Nicolò Fagioli – 6/10

Made a brilliant long switchover from the midfield to the left wing deep inside the opponent’s territory that laid the foundation for the second goal for his team. Apart from that, his contributions were low

CM – Danilo Cataldi – 6/10

He was seen more in the defensive region rather than in the midfield and attacking third. His defensive approach did not seem meaningful to the gaffer and was subbed off in the 59th minute. However, this turned out to be costly as just 2 minutes after subbing him off, the opponent scored.

CM – Rolando Mandragora – 6.5/10

Had a decent day making some good amount of touches and providing accurate passes. Provided some key passes to Guðmundsson and Dodô which was the backbone for Fiorentina.

RWB – Dodô – 7/10

Made some proper dribbles inside the box, confusing Theo Hernandez, and provided some dangerous crosses. Provided assist for the second goal by accurately passing the long ball from outside the box to Kean who was lurking just in front of the goal.

CF – Albert Guðmundsson – 7/10

Properly recovered the ball from Musah and made a solid run inside the box after which he provided a carpet pass inside the box, which hit Thiaw, leading to the first goal for Fiorentina. Made some good runs by finding space in between the backline and put some serious pressure on them.

CF – Moise Kean– 6.5/10

Properly positioned himself just in front of the post and made a powerful shot that shook the net doubling the delight for Fiorentina. His dynamic positioning certainly mounted pressure for the defenders and the goalkeeper. Missed an one-vs-one with the keeper that could have regained the lead for his team. Although he had an impressive first half, he had a contarsting performance in the second. Missed multiple 1v1 chances in the second half.

Sub – Cher Ndour – 6/10

Sub – Lucas Beltrán – 6/10

Sub – Pietro Comuzzo – 6/10

Sub – Michael Folorunsho – 6/10

Sub – Yacine Adli – 6/10

Coach – Raffaele Palladino – 6/10

Deployed his tactics properly in the first half, as a result of which his team scored two goals in quick succession. However, the greed to score more led to problems of leaving gaps in the defence. Was seen visibly frustrated after the team lost its lead and was given a red card due to this.
