AC Milan Eye Simone Scuffet After Marco Sportiello Injury
According to recent reports, AC Milan is reportedly exploring acquiring Cagliari goalkeeper Simone Scuffet after a recent injury to their current backup, Marco Sportiello.
Sportiello, who had earlier joined Milan from Atalanta last summer, sustained a serious cut to his hand in an accident at the team’s hotel during their pre-season tour in the United States. He is now expected to be out for several months.
Reports further state that Sportiello is anticipated to be sidelined for at least two months. Consequently, on Saturday, he missed Milan’s pre-season friendly against Manchester City with 19-year-old Luca Torriani stepping in as a replacement.
Mike Maignan, Milan’s first-choice goalkeeper, is still on holiday following his participation in France’s semi-final run at EURO 2024 and is scheduled to return on August 2 after his teammates return from their US tour.
Milan in talks Cagliari for Scuffet transfer
With a temporary gap in their senior goalkeeper position, Milan is reportedly interested in Scuffet as a potential addition. The club has already contacted Cagliari to discuss a possible transfer, and Scuffet is said to have given his consent to the move. If Milan finalises a deal with Cagliari, it’s expected that Cagliari will seek to negotiate with Udinese for Marco Silvestri as a replacement.
Scuffet was born in Udine and developed through the Udinese academy. After loan spells with Como, Kasimpasa, and Spezia, he moved to APOEL in Cyprus and CFR Cluj in Romania. He returned to Italy last year, joining Cagliari, where he became the starting goalkeeper.
Milan will next take the field on Thursday to face Real Madrid followed by a match against Barcelona on August 7th. After returning to Italy, Milan will play their last pre-season fixture on August 13th at San Siro, where they will compete against Monza for the Berlusconi Trophy. The Serie A season will commence for Milan on August 17th with a match against Torino.
