Portugal vs Scotland Player Ratings: Bruno Fernandes stars in 2-1 Nations League win

Portugal ended their first international break of the domestic season with a 2-1 UEFA Nations League group stage win over Scotland. In what is surely an anomaly, three players who have played for Manchester United in their career, got on the scoresheet.

The visitors actually took the lead early in the game thanks to Scott McTominay, who recently moved to Napoli. Scotland held on for the lead in the first-half before Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo struck in the 54th and 88th minute of the second half to complete a comeback win.

Diogo Costa – 6.5/10 – Conceded the opening goal of the game, and didn’t have to do much apart from that. Made just one save throughout the rest of the game apart from the goal.

Defenders

Nelson Semedo -7.8/10- Most accurate passer in the Portuguese team. Helped link play with Silva well.

Antonio Silva – 7.5/10 – The 20-year-old Benfica youngster is surely going to have a big future with Portugal. At such a young age, the maturity he possessed to keep Scottish defenders at bay was commendable.

Ruben Dias – 7/10 – Possessed an incredible 97% pass completion rate throughout the 90 minutes and was rock-solid at the back whenever he was needed.

Nuno Mendes – 8/10 – Got the all-important assist for Cristiano Ronaldo’s match-winning goal in the 88th minute. Handled Christie and McTominay very well.

Midfielders

Bernardo Silva – 7/10 – Played for 68 minutes and created buck loads of chances for Portugal’s forwards, who couldn’t run behind the lines as much as they should have throughout the game.

Joao Palhinha – 7/10 – Was decent in flashes but did what he did best, controlled the pace of Portugal’s midfield. Played just 45 minutes and was substituted off at half-time.

Bruno Fernandes – 9/10 – Our man of the match, Fernandes scored the opening goal of the game which gave Portugal the confidence to claim the win.

Forwards

Rafael Leao – 8/10 – One of the best players on the pitch. Created three big chances for his teammates and also bagged an assist for Bruno Fernandes’ goal.

Diogo Jota – 7/10 – Played the full 90 minutes and was at his menacing best. Also took three shots at Scotland’s goal.

Pedro Neto – 6.5/10 – Neto tried his best to get involved as compared to the previous game, however he was substituted at half-time.

Angus Gunn – 5.5/10 – Should have done better for both of Portugal’s goals. He did make six saves in the game but made a costly error that led to Portugal scoring.

Defenders

Anthony Ralston – 6/10 – Won 100% of the tackles, but was dribbled past multiple times in the game.

Grant Hanley – 6/10 – Started well but withered off as time went. Was okay-ish in dealing with Portugal forwards’ physicality.

Scott McKenna – 6.5/10 – The Las Palmas defender made three blocks and nine clearances and was the pick of the Scottish defenders.

Andrew Robertson – 5.5/10 – Not his usual self, Neto and Bernardo Silva gave him a hard time.

Midfielders

Billy Gilmour – 6/10 – The new Napoli star had an 80% pass completion rate, and was average at best.

Kenny McLean – 7.5/10 – The Norwich City midfielder provided the assist for Scott McTominay’s goal for Scotland. Played 74 minutes and had a 93% pass completion rate.

Scott McTominay – 7.5/10 – Joint top of the ratings for Scotland is the new Napoli midfielder. McTominay played the full 90 minutes, scoring the opening goal for his country.

Ryan Christie – 6/10 – Highly ineffective, and could be dropped for the next game. Was substituted at 87 minutes.

John McGinn – 6/10 – Tried to be industrious in carrying the ball from wide, but left-wing is definitely not his position to play in.

Forwards

Lynden Dykes – 6.5/10 – Played 74 minutes and never stopped running and chasing for the ball and pressing Portugal defenders. Won a total of 11 duels against the Portuguese defence.
