Rivals turned teammates? Newcastle eye Liverpool and Chelsea pair

Newcastle United are eyeing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling as the transfer window enters its last 10 days. Interestingly the pair were famously involved in a bust-up in an England camp back in 2019. The pair reportedly had to seperated after an altercation at St George’s Park the day after they had clashed during a Premier League match between Manchester City and Liverpool.

Both the players are expected to cost Newcastle not more than £80m combined. They are very astute signings as well, with Gomez primed to slot in at centre back, where the Magpies face an injury crisis. Sterling on the other hand will play on the right wing, forming a potentially brilliant front 3 with Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak.

Sterling is one of the very few senior players at Chelsea but under new manager Enzo Maresca, he seems to be out of favour. He is deemed surplus to requirements at the London club where his two year stint has been plagued by inconsistency. Sterling will be desperate to show he is still a prominent figure in the game after previously bagging 131 goals and 73 assists in 339 appearances for Manchester City during a seven-year spell at the Etihad Stadium.

Gomez on the other hand, has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield in recent years. He has been overtaken by Ibrahima Konate at first and now even Jarell Quansah. Gomez can also play at right back, but Newcastle already have great options there in the form of Kieran Trippier and Tino Livramento.
