FIFA calls for talks with European Leagues amid busy calendar dispute

FIFA seeks dialogue with FIFPRO Europe and European leagues

FIFA has extended an invitation to FIFPRO Europe and the European Leagues body for discussions following a dispute over the international match calendar.

The global players’ union FIFPRO and European Leagues, representing over 1,000 clubs from 33 countries, lodged a complaint with the European Commission on July 23 accusing FIFA of abusing its power.

They claim FIFA’s handling of the match calendar has negatively impacted the financial interests of national leagues and the well-being of players. They also argue that FIFA’s dual role as a regulator and competition organizer is a conflict of interest.

A FIFA spokesperson stated:

“FIFA has today reiterated an invitation to meet and discuss the calendar with World Leagues Association and FIFPRO, having received no response to a letter on 10 May 2024.”

FIFA Pushes for Productive Dialogue Over Legal Threats

FIFA emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue instead of legal battles. The spokesperson added:

“FIFA believes there is a more productive way forward for football than the threat of legal action, and the offer to engage in dialogue remains on the table. FIFA serves and balances the overall interests of world football, including the protection of players, and always strives to do what is best for the game around the world.”

The dispute arises from recent changes to the match calendar including the introduction of a 32-team Club World Cup.

The first edition of this expanded tournament is scheduled to take place in the United States in June and July next year, which will be featuring 12 European clubs.

This has raised concerns about player welfare, as many top players will be required to participate during a period that would typically be a long break just a year before the expanded 48-team World Cup in North America.
