Barcelona set to receive compensation from UEFA after Pedri injury
The 21-year-old Barcelona midfielder suffered a grade two internal lateral sprain after a heavy tackle from Toni Kroos in Spain’s quarter-final clash with Germany in Euro 2024 on Friday night.
The youngster was subbed off and left the pitch in tears, likely knowing that he would not play for his nation again in this tournament. Various reports have suggested that Pedri could be unavailable for the next six weeks which means he is set to miss Barcelona’s entire pre-season preparations.
“Following tests carried out on international player Pedri González, the Canarian player has a grade 2 internal lateral sprain in his left knee,” read a statement.
“The footballer will remain with his teammates until the end of the current training camp, which is focused on the Euro 2024 tournament.”
There is also a possibility that Pedri could miss the start of the 2024/25 season with Barcelona. But on a positive note, the Catalan giants will be compensated by UEFA.
Why will UEFA compensate Barcelona for Pedri injury?
The Barcelona midfielder is set to be sidelined for the next six weeks and will surely miss the club’s pre-season games against Manchester City, Real Madrid and AC Milan before their league opener against Valencia on August 17. His untimely injury in Euro 2024 has made it difficult for the Catalan giants but they may be entitled to compensation from UEFA.
Under FIFA club protection programme rules, UEFA will have to pay €20,548 (£17,390/$22,000) to Barcelona each day if Pedri remains injured beyond a month. As per Munde Deportivo, Pedri is expected to be out for a month and a half, so Barcelona could bag a hefty compensation package in the upward range of six figures.
