Mbappe Injury Shocker: Why France Benched Their Star Before Penalty Showdown against Portugal

Mbappe’s Early Exit Raises Questions

In a surprising move during the Euro 2024 quarterfinals against Portugal French head coach Didier Deschamps decided to take Kylian Mbappe off the field just 15 minutes before the end of extra time.

This decision puzzled many fans and analysts as the game was heading towards a penalty shootout.

The reason behind this bold decision became clear shortly after. Kylian Mbappe who had been playing with a broken nose since a collision with an Austrian player collided again this time with Portugal’s Bernardo Silva.

Although Mbappe managed to continue for a short while but he was substituted before the penalties began.

Mbappe was seen nursing his nose with an ice pack in the dugout raising concerns about his condition. But France manager Didier Deschamps clarified the situation in the post-match press conference saying that Mbappe was tired.

“Yes, he’s always very honest with me and the team, when he feels he doesn’t have the capacity to accelerate… He’s not at his top form … he felt very tired indeed,” Deschamps said, referring to muscle fatigue and the nose issue.

“I saw him struggling during the first period of extra time. It was pointless (to leave him on). Kylian has always been honest with me and the group, so it was only natural to bring in some new blood.”

France Triumphs Without Their Star

Despite the absence of their star player France managed to triumph over Portugal in the penalty shootout. The French team proved their depth and resilience with every penalty taker from Ousmane Dembélé to Theo Hernandez successfully converting their spot-kicks.

Didier Deschamps’ decision to bring on Bradley Barcola for Mbappe paid off as the young PSG forward confidently scored his penalty. Meanwhile, Portugal’s Joao Felix missed his crucial penalty hitting the post and ending Portugal’s hopes of winning the tournament.

France’s victory sets up a thrilling semifinal clash against Spain who secured a 2-1 win over hosts Germany. With the semifinals looming France will be hoping for Mbappe’s quick recovery. His presence could be crucial as Les Bleus aim to overcome a strong Spanish side and advance to the final.
