Preview

  • Tournament: Copa America 2024
  • Date: Sunday, 30th June
  • Kick-off time: 12:00 AM GMT
  • Venue: Orlando City Stadium

Canada and Chile are set to clash at the Inter & Co Stadium in Florida on Sunday as both aim to secure a spot in the Copa America 2024 knockout rounds. This is the first time these two nations have ever faced each other.

Canada made history on Wednesday by securing their first-ever Copa America victory defeating Peru 1-0. Jonathan David celebrating his 50th cap scored the decisive goal 16 minutes from time. This win places Canada second in Group A with three points. Another victory on Sunday would guarantee their quarter-final spot, while a draw might also suffice if Peru doesn’t upset group leaders Argentina.

Two-time champions Chile have had a challenging tournament earning only one point from their first two matches. After a goalless draw with Peru, they suffered a last-minute 1-0 loss to Argentina. Coach Ricardo Gareca who has coached at five different Copa Americas, admitted the late loss “hurt” but promised his team would give everything on Sunday.

Chile who are currently third in Group A needs a win and must outperform Peru’s result against Argentina to secure a top-two finish. Meanwhile, Canada looks to build on their recent success under new coach Jesse Marsch and make further history in their Copa America debut.

This match is crucial for both teams’ hopes of advancing, making for an exciting showdown in Florida.

As Canada prepares to face Chile in the Copa America 2024, coach Jesse Marsch may make several changes following their win over Peru. Derek Cornelius, Liam Millar, and Ismael Kone were substituted at halftime in that match and could start on the bench this Sunday.

Cornelius might be replaced by Kamal Miller in central defense. Richie Laryea is likely to keep his spot at left-back, which would allow Alphonso Davies to move forward on the left wing. Canada’s top scorers, Cyle Larin and Jonathan David, are expected to continue their partnership in attack. Either Tajon Buchanan or Jacob Shaffelburg could start on the right wing, potentially replacing Millar.

Chile’s coach Ricardo Gareca might also make a few adjustments. Ben Brereton Diaz is pushing to start in attack, possibly taking the place of Eduardo Vargas or Victor Davila. Dario Osorio is likely to retain his spot on the right wing. Alexis Sanchez, Chile’s all-time top scorer and most-capped player, is set to continue in the number 10 role. Despite being one booking away from suspension, Erick Pulgar is expected to start in midfield alongside either Rodrigo Echeverria or Marcelino Nunez.

This match is crucial for both teams, and the lineup changes could play a significant role in determining the outcome.

Canada vs Chile Prediction

A closely-fought contest between two teams with contrasting levels of experience on the Copa America stage could be on the cards this weekend. While Chile must win to keep their knockout hopes alive and may be seen by some as slight favourites, an upbeat Canada side, buoyed by their historic win against Peru, is likely to claim at least a share of the spoils.
